I have never been so relieved to see a wooden jetty in all my life. Twelve hours after leaving Manchester, there I stood on the shores of Lake Tjorn in Vastra Gotaland, clutching a carrier bag full of soggy digestive biscuits and wondering how my life had come to this.

The journey had been one of those epic Scandinavian adventures that starts with noble intentions and gradually unravels. Train to airport, flight to Gothenburg, hire car with suspiciously optimistic satnav directions, then a winding drive through pine forests and past red-painted cottages that looked plucked from a children's storybook. I was winning, I thought. I had even stopped at a supermarket in Stenungsund for supplies, feeling terribly local with my Swedish cheese selections.

The mishap came three minutes from the property. I had pulled over to check the final directions, parked on what I assumed was a gentle verge, and promptly watched my passenger-side front wheel sink into what the locals probably call a ditch and I call a trap. The biscuits, which had been perched on the seat, launched themselves into a puddle. My dignity sank with the wheel.

A passing farmer with a tractor appeared within ten minutes, because apparently that is how things work in rural Sweden. He spoke approximately four words of English and I speak approximately zero words of Swedish beyond "tack," which I deployed approximately forty times as he winched me free. He found the whole business tremendously amusing. I found it character-building.

Then finally, the property itself. The NOVASOL cottage sat right on the water's edge, all weathered wood and enormous windows that caught the late afternoon light and threw it back across the lake. I stood there with my damp biscuits and my mud-splattered trainers and simply stared. The silence was immediate and absolute, broken only by the occasional splash of something sensible living in the water.

Inside, the place smelled of pine and something faintly smoky, as if the previous guests had been living properly. The living area opened directly onto a deck through sliding doors, and I understood immediately that this was where I would be spending my time. The kitchen was compact but serious, the kind that assumes you might actually cook rather than just reheat. Upstairs, the bedrooms tucked themselves under sloping ceilings with the confident modesty of somewhere that knows exactly what it is.

I made tea with the biscuits that had survived, sitting on that deck as the evening settled in. The lake stretched out before me, dotted with small islands and the occasional distant sail. Somewhere across the water, a neighbour was burning something that smelled like autumn even though it was July.

That first hour, I did almost nothing. I watched the light change. I listened to birds I could not name. I thought about how I had spent the previous month in meetings about things I could no longer remember, and how this felt like a gentle reproach to all of that. The farmer's laughter, my sodden biscuits, the twelve-hour journey - none of it mattered now.

I had arrived somewhere that asked nothing of me except presence. It is a rare thing, I think, to find a place so immediately comfortable in its own skin that it allows you to drop yours. I sat there until the mosquitoes finally drove me inside, already planning nothing at all for the morning, and feeling absolutely brilliant about it.
