About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been more grateful to see a wooden porch in my entire life. After fourteen hours of travel that involved a delayed flight to Gothenburg, a train that smelled faintly of pickled herring, and a hire car with a sat nav that developed what I can only describe as an existential crisis, I finally pulled up to our little cottage in Sexdrega. The mishap came right at the end, as these things always do. I was so busy congratulating myself on navigating the winding lanes of Vastra Gotaland without ending up in a ditch that I completely failed to notice the rather large rock marking the edge of the property's gravel drive. The crunch was spectacular. The underside of the car and my dignity both took a hit. I sat there for a good minute, wondering if Swedish car insurance covers "driver was delirious with exhaustion and slightly hysterical."

The cottage itself saved the mood almost instantly. It is one of those proper red wooden places with white trim, the sort you see on postcards and assume must be staged for tourists. It was not. The paint was slightly weathered in that honest, unpretentious way, and the little porch had two wooden chairs that looked like they had supported decades of people doing absolutely nothing. I loved them immediately. The surrounding trees were already doing that soft, green thing they do in late spring, and somewhere in the distance I could hear what I later learned was a proper forest stream, not the decorative trickle you get in garden centres back home.

Getting inside required the sort of key retrieval that makes you feel like a low-level spy. The lockbox was hidden behind a panel near the woodshed, which I only found after walking round the building twice and muttering to myself like a confused badger. The door opened with a satisfying creak, the kind that says "I am old and I do not care about your modern silent hinges." The smell hit me next, that particular blend of pine and aged wood and something faintly smoky, as if the fireplace had been recently used and the memory of it still lingered in the walls.

I will be honest, I had worried about the practicalities. Self-catering in rural Sweden sounded like it might involve compromises, perhaps a shower with the enthusiasm of a sad drizzle or a kitchen last updated when ABBA were still together. The reality was almost annoyingly pleasant. The kitchen was simple but completely functional, with a proper cooker and a fridge that hummed contentedly rather than sounding like a dying wasp. The living area had a wood-burning stove that I instantly decided was my new best friend, even though I had not yet worked out how to light it without setting off some kind of alarm.

The bedrooms were upstairs under a sloping ceiling that demanded you pay attention or suffer a mild concussion. I hit my head twice in the first hour, which felt like an appropriate welcome. The beds were made up with crisp linen, and the windows looked out onto nothing but trees and the occasional bird that seemed to be judging my unpacking technique.

By the time I had brought in the bags, discovered the small terrace with its view towards the lake I could just glimpse through the trees, and made myself a cup of tea that tasted absurdly good given my exhaustion, the rock incident had become funny rather than mortifying. That is the thing about first impressions of a place. They fix themselves in your memory not as a list of features but as a feeling, a particular quality of light and quiet and the sense that you have accidentally stumbled into somewhere that knows exactly what it is. Sexdrega, on that first evening, felt like exactly that sort of somewhere. I sat on that slightly wonky porch chair as the light went soft and golden, watched a rabbit appear at the edge of the trees and stare at me with what I chose to interpret as friendly curiosity, and thought that fourteen hours of chaos was a perfectly reasonable price for this particular moment of peace.
