About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so grateful to see a red wooden house in my life, and that includes the time I mistook a barn for our Airbnb in the Cotswolds. The drive from Gothenburg had been straightforward enough - motorways giving way to two-lane roads, then single-track lanes where the pine trees leaned in like curious neighbours - but it was the final five miles that nearly finished me off.

The sat nav, in its infinite wisdom, had decided that "shortest route" meant "go via a gravel track that hasn't seen maintenance since the nineties." I was crawling along at walking pace, my partner was gripping the door handle like we were on a rollercoaster, and our youngest had just announced she needed the loo with the particular urgency that only a seven-year-old can muster. Then came the mishap. A puddle, innocent-looking enough, turned out to be a small lake in disguise. I went through it with more enthusiasm than wisdom, and the resulting splash was genuinely spectacular. Less spectacular was the immediate realisation that I had soaked my own shoes, which were resting on the passenger-side floor mat. Don't ask. I still don't fully understand the physics, and I've had three weeks to think about it.

We emerged from the car at the Mellerud cottage looking like a family who had survived a minor shipwreck. Damp socks, crumpled crisps packets, and a general air of having been mildly defeated by Scandinavia. But then the door opened - well, I fumbled with the key box for a solid four minutes, but eventually the door opened - and the smell hit us. That particular Swedish cottage scent of wood and something faintly herby, maybe from the cleaning products, maybe from decades of proper living. The kind of smell that makes you exhale without meaning to.

The place was immediately, obviously right. Not fancy, not trying to be anything other than what it was. Wooden floors that creaked in friendly places, a kitchen with enough mugs for a small army, and windows that framed the lake like someone had actually planned it that way. Our eldest, who had been wearing the sullen expression of a teenager who would rather be anywhere else, actually said "oh" in a tone that suggested grudging approval. I counted that as a win.

I changed my socks. This felt like an important ritual, a fresh start. Then we did the tour that every family does in a new place - opening cupboards, testing the sofa bounce, arguing about who got which bedroom. The cottage had that lived-in quality that makes you relax instantly. Not pristine, not neglected, just properly used. Someone had left a pack of coffee filters and a half-used candle. I found this weirdly touching, as if we'd been trusted with something.

By evening, the mishap had become funny. It always does, given enough time and a glass of wine. We sat on the little terrace, still in our travel clothes because unpacking felt like too much commitment, and watched the light do that long, slow fade that Swedish summer evenings do so well. The lake was mirror-calm. A bird made a noise that none of us could identify. Someone - I think it was me - suggested a swim tomorrow, and nobody laughed.

That's the thing about arriving somewhere properly. The journey, the chaos, the wet socks, it all becomes part of the texture. We weren't tourists yet. We were just a slightly damp family, sitting in the quiet, feeling something unclench. The cottage had done nothing except exist, be itself, and that was exactly enough.
