About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so relieved to see a red wooden house in my life. Twelve hours after leaving Manchester, two flights, a train to Gothenburg, and a hire car that smelled faintly of fish, I finally pulled up to our Mellerud cottage in Vastra Gotaland. That is when I discovered I had packed my partner's left welly, my right walking boot, and absolutely no socks whatsoever.

The journey had been one of those travel days that starts with misplaced optimism and ends with you questioning every life choice. The Ryanair flight was actually fine, which should have been my warning. The train from Landvetter was picturesque in that Scandinavian way, all birch trees and glassy lakes, until I realised I had been staring at the same cow for twenty minutes because we had stopped for "signalling works." My Swedish extends to "tack" and "skal," so I just smiled at the conductor as if this were perfectly normal and not a personal test of my bladder control.

By the time I reached the cottage, tucked down a gravel track near Lake Vanern, I was running on coffee and stubbornness. The key was in the lockbox exactly where the instructions said, which felt like a small miracle given my current luck. I fumbled with the code, dropped it twice, and finally stepped inside with the triumphant air of someone who had just solved a Rubik's cube blindfolded.

And then I just stood there.

The place smelled of pine and something else, something clean and warm that I eventually identified as the wood-burning stove in the corner. The kitchen was simple, white cabinets and a proper coffee maker, the kind that promises redemption. Through the windows, the late afternoon light was doing that golden Scandinavian thing, turning the grass outside into something from a tourism brochure. I had expected basic. I had prepared myself for functional. What I got was immediately, annoyingly charming.

I put my mismatched footwear down and investigated. The living area had one of those proper Swedish fireplaces, the sort that makes you feel you should be wearing a chunky jumper and contemplating fjords. There was a small deck out back, and beyond that, trees and the faint suggestion of water. I later learned the lake was a short walk, but in that moment, just knowing it was there felt sufficient.

The mishap with the shoes became funny rather than frustrating, somewhere between my third cup of coffee and finding a spare pair of slippers in the cupboard. There is something about arriving somewhere that immediately feels right which disarms you completely. I had planned to unpack methodically, to assert control over my environment. Instead I sat on the little sofa, watched the light shift across the wooden walls, and felt the particular weight of a long journey finally lifting.

My partner arrived the next morning, actual matching footwear in tow, to find me slightly feral, slightly smug, and entirely unwilling to leave. I had already claimed the good chair by the window.
