About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden veranda in my life. After six hours of driving from Gothenburg, three of which involved my youngest being spectacularly sick into a Tupperware box we had optimistically brought "just in case," we finally pulled up to our Mellerud cottage. I stepped out of the car, stretched my legs, and promptly walked straight into a low-hanging branch that I am convinced had been lying in wait for me specifically. The kids found this absolutely hilarious. My husband, wisely, said nothing.

The cottage sat nestled among birch trees, all red paint and white trim, looking like something from a postcard I would normally dismiss as overly quaint. But after that journey, quaint was exactly what I needed. The key was in a little metal box with a combination lock, and I spent a good five minutes failing to open it because I had written the code down on my phone, which had died somewhere around Alingsas. There is something deeply humbling about standing in the Swedish countryside, repeatedly entering 1247 when the code is actually 1274, while mosquitoes conduct what I can only describe as a feasibility study on my ankles.

When we finally got inside, the smell hit me. Not the musty dampness I had braced for, but something clean and woody, like pine needles and old books. The kitchen had a proper cooker, the sort with knobs that actually turn, and a table by the window that looked out onto nothing more dramatic than a patch of grass and a clothesline. I loved it immediately. There was a wood-burning stove in the corner, and my son declared he would be "in charge of the fire," which lasted exactly until he realised it involved actual effort and not just dramatic poking with an iron tool.

I should mention the lake. Lake Vanern was perhaps ten minutes' walk away, down a path that started promisingly enough before becoming suspiciously muddy. We had packed swimming costumes with the enthusiasm of people who had clearly forgotten how cold Swedish water is in late spring. My husband went in first, because he is from Yorkshire and therefore considers anything above hypothermia "pleasant." He emerged making sounds I have never heard from a human before. The children and I contented ourselves with skimming stones and finding sticks that looked vaguely like weapons, which occupied them for a genuinely impressive length of time.

What struck me most, that first evening, was the quiet. Not silence exactly - there were birds, distant tractors, the occasional crack from someone's woodpile - but a kind of absence that I had not realised I needed. No traffic hum, no neighbour's television, nothing pressing. I sat on that veranda with a cup of tea that went cold because I kept forgetting to drink it, and watched the light change over the trees. My daughter came and leaned against me, smelling of lake water and the biscuit she had smuggled from the kitchen. We did not say much. It was enough.

The mishaps continued, of course. The shower had a temperament, the local shop closed earlier than Google suggested, and someone forgot to pack pyjamas. But standing there, branch-mark still faintly visible on my forehead, I felt something shift. This was not a holiday of grand moments or checked-off sights. It was smaller than that, and somehow better. The Tupperware box got a ceremonial rinse and retired to the car boot. The code for the key box went on actual paper. And I decided, right there on that wooden veranda, that I would try to carry some of this quiet home with me, though I suspected the Mellerud mosquitoes might object to the relocation.
