About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so grateful to see a wooden porch in my entire life. After six hours of driving from Gothenburg, during which I managed to get spectacularly lost on what I am almost certain was the same roundabout three times, I finally pulled up to the Koepmannebro in late October. The sat nav had given up on me somewhere near Mellerud. I had given up on myself shortly after.

The first thing that struck me was the light. Or rather, the deliberate lack of it. The sun had already packed up for the day by half past four, leaving the lake in front of the property looking less like water and more like a sheet of smoked glass. I stood there with my boot half on the gravel drive, one hand still on the car door, feeling the damp autumn air settle straight through my completely inadequate jacket. I had packed for a brisk Swedish autumn. What I got was something far more committed to the season.

The Koepmannebro itself loomed out of the half-dark like a friendly wooden ghost. It is one of those traditional red-painted properties that seem to absorb whatever light remains and give back something warmer. The porch light flickered on as I approached, presumably on a sensor, and I felt genuinely welcomed by a machine. I had been told to expect a key safe. What I had not been told was that the combination would require me to perform a small pantomime in the porch light, juggling phone, torch, and a carrier bag of groceries that was rapidly surrendering its structural integrity. A jar of lingonberry jam made a break for it and rolled into a flower bed. I left it there as an offering to the Swedish soil. It felt ceremonially appropriate.

Stepping inside was like walking into a different season entirely. The property had that particular Scandinavian trick of being simultaneously rustic and impossibly cosy. The wood-burning stove dominated the main room, and I understood immediately that this would become the gravitational centre of my stay. October in Vastra Gotaland does not invite casual lounging in drafty corners. It demands a strategic approach to warmth. I found myself planning my evenings around which chair sat closest to the stove, which was approximately three feet from optimal roasting distance.

The lake, visible through the darkened windows, had taken on that peculiar autumn stillness. No boats, no swimmers, just the occasional ripple from something I chose to believe was a fish rather than whatever else lives in Swedish lakes once the tourists have departed. The trees surrounding the property were in their final flourish, golds and rusts that would soon enough give way to the stripped honesty of November. There was something slightly theatrical about it, as if the landscape knew I had arrived and was putting on its last good show before winter came properly.

I made tea with the efficiency of a man who has earned it through mild automotive trauma. Sat in that chair, three feet from the stove, I watched my breath stop showing in the air as the room warmed. The season outside pressed against the windows, but it could not get in. That is the particular magic of places like this in autumn. They do not fight the darkness and the damp. They simply offer a different contract with them.

Tomorrow I would explore properly. There would be walks along the lake, perhaps a drive to the local shop in Mellerud for supplies, the small negotiations with daylight that October demands. But for that first evening, I sat in my inadequate jacket, gradually peeling off layers as the stove did its work, and felt something I had not expected. The season had not been an obstacle to my holiday. It was the entire point. The early dark, the chill air, the absolute necessity of that glowing stove, they had transformed what might have been a simple rental property into something that felt like shelter in the oldest sense.

The jam remained in the flower bed. I like to think it is still there, slowly becoming one with the Vastra Gotaland earth, a small testament to my arrival and the particular comedy of trying to appear competent in a season that has no interest in your pretensions.
