About Vastra Gotaland
The mishap, though. I must tell you about the mishap. Somewhere near Henan village, convinced I was nearly there, I stopped to photograph a particularly charming red wooden house. Backed straight into a ditch. Not a dramatic ditch. A modest, almost apologetic ditch. But a ditch nonetheless. Twenty minutes of undignified wheel-spinning later, a passing local in a Volvo estate stopped, said "Ah," in that wonderfully understated Swedish way, and produced a tow rope from his boot as if this happened to him every Tuesday. Which, for all I know, it does. I arrived at the cottage slightly mud-splattered, thoroughly humbled, and absolutely ready to do absolutely nothing for a week. The cottage itself is one of those classic Swedish wooden numbers, painted that deep Falun red with white trim round the windows. Nothing fancy, nothing trying too hard. Just a straightforward, honest little house with a deck that catches the sun from midday until it dips behind the trees. I dumped my bags, made a cup of tea that tasted of triumph and mild trauma, and collapsed into a weathered wooden chair on that deck. The sun was warm. A bumblebee investigated my shoe. Somewhere distant, a boat engine puttered across the water. I did not move for two hours. That became the pattern, really. Lazy mornings with coffee and a book on the deck, watching the light shift across the little garden. The cottage sits in a quiet spot, not isolated exactly, but private enough that you feel properly removed from everything. I'd wander down to the nearby shoreline in my slippers, because why not, and sit on a rock watching the boats in Henan harbour. The water there is that particular Scandinavian blue-grey, calm and reflective, and on sunny days it glitters in a way that makes you understand why people paint landscapes. I brought three books and finished two of them, which for me constitutes almost athletic achievement. The third I kept deliberately unread, saving it like a good biscuit. There is something deeply satisfying about reading in sunshine, breaking off to watch a dragonfly or listen to the odd car passing on the lane. No pressure to sightsee, no checklist of experiences to accumulate. Just the pleasure of being somewhere else, somewhere slower, with nowhere particular to be. The local shop in Henan village became my daily expedition. A ten-minute stroll, just enough to justify an ice cream on the walk back. The woman who ran it recognised me by day three, which felt like being accepted into a very small, very exclusive club. I'd buy bread, some of those excellent Swedish crisps, maybe a bottle of local beer, and potter home feeling like I'd accomplished something monumental. Evenings were for grilling on the little barbecue, eating outside until the light finally faded around ten, which still surprises me every time I visit Sweden. The quiet there is different from home. Not empty, just... settled. Comfortable in itself. Looking back at that week, I realise how much I needed to stop trying to make holidays into projects. The ditch incident forced a kind of surrender. I arrived flustered, embarrassed, over-caffeinated and over-scheduled in my own mind. The cottage and the sunshine and the glorious nothingness of it all slowly unpicked that. By day four, I was genuinely excited about a particularly good patch of sunlight that moved across the living room floor. I timed my reading to follow it. We do not talk enough about the virtue of doing very little in beautiful places. The Henan cottage asked nothing of me except presence, and I am trying to carry that lesson home, though I suspect it will not survive first contact with my normal routine. Still, I have the memory of that deck, that sun, that particular quality of stillness. And I have the photograph of a red house that cost me twenty minutes of humiliation and gave me, indirectly, one of the most genuinely restful weeks I have ever had. |
