About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so happy to see a wooden sign with a moose painted on it. After a flight to Gothenburg, a train to Trollhattan, and a hire car that smelled faintly of fish and optimism, I finally turned onto a gravel track somewhere west of Lake Vanern and spotted my destination. The Haellekis. My home for the week. My sanctuary. My... oh no.

The mishap, you see, happened about three miles back. I had stopped at a petrol station for a coffee and what the Swedes charmingly call a "fika," though in my case it was more of a frantic sugar injection. In my haste to get back on the road before the light faded, I had managed to leave my entire wash bag on the roof of the car. I realised this only when I heard a faint thump somewhere near a field of barley, followed by the sight of my toothbrush cartwheeling into a ditch like a tiny plastic gymnast.

So there I stood, gravel crunching under my boots, moose sign gleaming in the late afternoon sun, smelling distinctly of petrol station coffee and mild panic. Not exactly the composed arrival I had imagined.

But then the Haellekis did what proper Swedish countryside properties do best. It waited patiently for me to catch my breath.

The first thing that struck me was the stillness. Not the oppressive kind, but the sort that feels earned. The house sat among proper old pines, with the lake visible through a fringe of birch trees that were just beginning to turn. The air smelled of woodsmoke from somewhere distant and that particular cold-water freshness you only get near big Swedish lakes. I stood there with my single remaining toiletry item, a travel-sized deodorant I had fortunately kept in my coat pocket, and felt something in my shoulders actually drop.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, though I fumbled it twice because my fingers had gone numb somewhere around Trollhattan. The door opened with that satisfying weight of a well-made Swedish door, not the flimsy sort that shudders in a breeze. Inside, the smell of timber hit me immediately, proper pine that had been allowed to age without being drowned in varnish. The living area was simple, unapologetically so, with a wood-burning stove that looked like it had witnessed several decades of satisfactory evenings.

I dumped my bags, what remained of them, and did what any sensible person would do. I made tea with the hob, found a mug that said "Vanern" on it in faded letters, and stood at the kitchen window watching the light change over the water. A pair of ducks landed somewhere out of sight, their arrival announced only by the splash and subsequent ripples I could see threading between the trees.

The funny thing about travelling alone, I thought, stirring my tea with a pen because my teaspoon was presumably enjoying its new life in a barley field, is that you spend so much time planning the perfect arrival. The right outfit, the right mindset, the right collection of toiletries arranged just so. And then you turn up reeking of petrol station pastries, having scattered your possessions across West Sweden like some kind of personal care product confetti, and the place accepts you anyway.

I found a spare toothbrush in a little welcome pack by the sink, because of course I did. The Swedes think of everything.

By the time I had lit the stove and watched it catch properly, the last of the panic had burned off too. The Haellekis creaked gently around me, settling into evening. Somewhere a boat engine started up on the lake, then cut out, leaving proper silence behind it.

I sat on the wooden bench outside, wrapped in a blanket I found folded on the sofa, and watched the stars emerge with the embarrassing clarity they only seem to manage when you are far enough from anywhere. My toothbrush was in a ditch. My dignity was questionable. But my first impression of this quiet corner of Vastra Gotaland? Already, impossibly, I felt like I had arrived exactly where I was meant to be.
