About Vastra Gotaland
I have never been so grateful to see a gravel driveway in all my life. After seven hours of planes, trains, and a hire car that smelled faintly of wet dog, I finally rolled up to our little place on Orust only to discover I had been confidently navigating us to entirely the wrong cottage for a solid twenty minutes. My other half sat in silence as I performed a three-point turn in someone's vegetable patch, muttering apologies to a very unimpressed cat. Turns out the sat nav had decided "Bohuslan" was more of a suggestion than a destination. We found the right place eventually, tucked down a lane where the trees lean in like they're sharing secrets.

The cottage itself sat there looking terribly pleased with itself, all red wood and white trim with a deck that practically begged for bare feet. I dumped our bags with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who had personally rowed from Gothenburg and promptly claimed the hammock. It swayed alarmingly under my weight, which I chose to interpret as character rather than structural concern. The afternoon sun had that particular Swedish quality to it, bright and generous and utterly indifferent to my travel-worn face.

We did very little that first evening beyond opening wine and watching the light change over the water. The cottage looks out towards the archipelago, little islands dotting about like crumbs on a blue tablecloth. I kept thinking I ought to fetch my camera, ought to document something, ought to at least change out of my travel clothes. Instead I sat there in my wrinkled t-shirt, drinking something local and white, feeling the particular smugness of someone who has absolutely nothing scheduled for days.

The next morning I woke to proper sunshine streaming through thin curtains and the realisation that my ambitious plan to "explore the island properly" was actively offensive to the spirit of the place. Orust does not want your hiking boots and your itinerary. Orust wants you to wander down to the little jetty with a paperback, to paddle about in water that makes you squeak at first, to eat lunch at two in the afternoon because you simply forgot to check the time. We walked perhaps half a mile to a rocky outcrop where someone had left a weathered bench facing the sea, clearly understanding the assignment better than I did.

I read three chapters of a novel I had been carrying around since March. I cannot tell you what happened in them. Something about the combination of sunshine and salt air turns my brain to pleasant mush. We found wild strawberries growing near the lane, tiny things that tasted of concentrated summer, and ate them straight from the plant like children without manners. My other half attempted a swim and emerged after approximately ninety seconds with the dignity of a startled seal. The water here is not kidding about being the North Sea, however pretty it looks.

By the third day I had stopped checking my phone entirely. The cottage has no television, which initially struck me as potential hardship and quickly revealed itself as profound kindness. Evenings stretched out with card games I played badly and conversations that wandered nowhere in particular. I learned that I am someone who fidgets through stillness at home but utterly surrenders to it given the right setting and sufficient access to a decent deckchair.

On our final morning I sat with coffee watching a heron work the shoreline with more patience than I have ever managed about anything. I thought about all the holidays where I raced about ticking boxes, collecting experiences like stamps, and felt briefly foolish. Then the sun warmed my shoulders and the foolishness passed, replaced by something quieter and probably more useful.
