About Vastra Gotaland
When we finally pulled up to Animskog, tucked into the woodland near the shores of Lake Anten, I was in that peculiar state of mild humiliation mixed with desperate need for a cup of tea. The cottage sat there among the pines looking impossibly picturesque, all traditional wooden cladding and a proper proper porch, and I immediately felt the tension of my navigational incompetence begin to dissolve. There's something about Swedish forest air that rather insists you stop being an idiot and just breathe. The key was where they'd said it would be, which felt like a small miracle given my recent performance. Pushing open the door, we were hit by that particular smell of a well-kept Swedish holiday home - slightly woody, faintly of pine, with the ghost of a hundred previous families' woodsmoke. The children bolted past me to claim bedrooms, leaving me to stand in the living area and absorb the simple fact of the place. Beamed ceiling, proper fireplace, furniture that looked like it had actually been chosen for comfort rather than some interior designer's portfolio. I could see straight through to the kitchen, compact but entirely sufficient, and beyond that the glass doors leading out to the deck where the lake glimmered between the trees. My partner appeared with two mugs of tea - they'd found the kettle, at least - and we stood on that deck in a comfortable silence that felt earned. A woodpecker was doing something industrious on a nearby trunk. Somewhere out on the water, a boat puttered past at that unhurried pace that immediately marks you as on holiday proper. I found myself thinking, with the kind of clarity that only arrives after mild automotive trauma, that this was precisely what we'd needed. Not an adventure. Not an experience. Just this - trees, water, space to not achieve anything in particular. The children re-emerged demanding to know about swimming, about fishing, about whether there were kayaks. There weren't, but the lake was right there, and there were proper rocks for jumping from further along the shore, and a little beach area where the water shelved gently enough for nervous swimmers. We spent that first evening doing almost nothing - a basic pasta supper, a small fire in the grate because the children insisted, an early night because the journey had taken rather longer than advertised. I woke to mist on the lake and the realisation that I'd left the car unlocked all night. Typical. But standing barefoot on the dew-wet deck with my morning tea, watching the fog lift in slow strips to reveal the water proper, I couldn't bring myself to care much. Gothenburg with its excellent shops and museums sat only forty minutes away, and we'd visit eventually. But not yet. For now, there was a hammock to test, forest paths to wander without purpose, and the profound luxury of having absolutely nowhere I needed to be. |
