About Varmland
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden cabin in my life. After six hours of driving from Oslo, convinced my sat nav had developed a personal vendetta against me, I finally found myself bumping down what I generously called a "track" but was really two tyre marks through a birch forest. The mishap? I'd taken a wrong turn somewhere near the Norwegian border and spent forty-five minutes following a logging road that ended at a very surprised farmer's hay barn. He waved me back with the weary patience of someone who'd done this many times before.

The cabin sat on the edge of Lake Oestmark, though "sat" implies a permanence that felt almost accidental. Red paint peeling just enough to look charming rather than neglected, a porch that sagged in the middle like a comfortable armchair. I stood there with my bags, still smelling of petrol station coffee, and felt the particular foolishness of the lost traveller who has stumbled into exactly the right place.

I had planned nothing. This was meant to be a walking holiday with marked trails and sensible ordnance survey ambitions. Instead, I spent my first morning wandering without purpose, following a path that started behind the cabin and seemed to lead nowhere in particular. The birch gave way to spruce, then to something older and more tangled. I found a clearing where someone had abandoned a wooden sledge decades ago, now mossed over and sprouting small white mushrooms from its runners. A perfect stillness, broken only by what I later learned was a black woodpecker, though at the time I thought it was someone hammering in the distance and shouted "hello" like an idiot.

Getting properly lost became my daily ritual. On the third day I followed a stream that grew narrower and more insistent, pushing through willow scrub until I emerged at a small pond no map seemed to acknowledge. Two moose stood at the far edge, knee-deep, watching me with the unhurried assessment of creatures who know they belong and you do not. I backed away slowly, not from fear but from the sense of intruding on something private.

The accidental discoveries accumulated. A smoke sauna by a smaller lake, unlocked, with a handwritten note in Swedish I couldn't read and a tin of birch whiskes left behind. I didn't use it, but I sat on its step and watched the water darken towards evening. A clearing where wild strawberries grew so thick I ate until my fingers stained red and my stomach protested. A rocky outcrop where someone had carved initials in 1967, the letters now softened to illegibility.

I never found that outcrop again, though I tried. This became part of the pleasure. The landscape refused my attempts at mastery, at collection. Each wrong turn produced something I hadn't earned and couldn't keep.

On my final morning I got lost one last time, deliberately. I walked until the path dissolved, until I stood in marshy ground with my boots sinking and no clear direction home. For perhaps ten minutes I felt genuine panic, the rational brain calculating distances and daylight. Then I spotted a familiar granite formation, laughed at myself, and found my way back to the sagging porch by lunch.

I sat there with a cup of terrible instant coffee and understood something I couldn't quite articulate. The farmer's hay barn, the unmapped pond, the lost outcrop with its unreadable initials. I had come to Vaermland with a plan and found instead the particular joy of surrendering to uncertainty, of trusting that wrong turns might lead somewhere worth being. The cabin needed a lick of paint. I needed to get lost more often.
