Very cozy, newer cottage located close to the forest and only 1.3 km from Lake Fryken. Beautiful location with mountains and deep valleys and good possibilities to see game directly from the house. Good berry and mushroom area. The house has a large open space with well-equipped kitchen and combined living and dining room with exposed roof structure that allows plenty of light into the room. 2 sleeping places upstairs are mattresses. In the annex there are 2 more bedrooms.

About Varmland
I have never been so grateful to see a red wooden house in my entire life. Six hours after leaving Gothenburg, two wrong turns, one heated debate with a sat nav that clearly fancied itself as a rally co-driver, and a spectacularly ill-timed coffee spill directly onto my only clean pair of jeans, I finally pulled up to the Lysvik holiday home in Varmland. The coffee incident happened at a petrol station in Karlstad. I had been so proud of my travel mug, you see. Leak-proof, supposedly. I gave it a little shake to demonstrate its excellence to absolutely no one in the car, and the lid surrendered immediately. Brown liquid everywhere. I spent the rest of the drive smelling like a mediocre cappuccino and feeling increasingly sorry for myself.

But then the trees parted. There it sat, proper Swedish red with white trim, perched on the edge of Lake Fryken with a little wooden jetty poking out like an inviting finger. The late afternoon sun was doing that golden thing it does in late summer, turning everything slightly magical and forgiving. My jeans suddenly mattered very little.

I stepped out of the car and immediately made my second error of the day. I had read about the peace and quiet of Varmland. I had prepared myself for serenity. What I had not prepared for was the sheer volume of nothing. No traffic hum, no distant motorway, just the soft lap of water against stones and what I later learned was a family of coal tits having a domestic in the birch trees. It was so quiet I could hear my own slightly embarrassing breathing. I stood there like a lemon, just listening, until a fish jumped somewhere out on the lake and I nearly leapt out of my coffee-stained skin.

The key was in the lockbox exactly where promised, which felt like a small miracle given my recent relationship with travel logistics. The door opened with that satisfyingly solid Scandinavian weight to it, and I stepped into a smell I can only describe as properly cabin-ish. Wood, slightly lemony cleaning product, and the faintest ghost of someone else's holiday cooking. The living room had enormous windows facing the lake, and I did that thing where you drop your bags exactly where you stand and drift toward the view like a sleepwalker.

I had told myself I would be sensible. Unpack methodically. Find the nearest shop in Lysvik village before it closed. Instead I found the coffee maker, established that my emergency supply of tea bags had survived the journey, and stood on the little wooden deck with a steaming mug watching the light change on the water. A family of ducks cruised past in perfect formation, clearly on important duck business. I saluted them with my mug like we were old friends.

The mishaps of the journey now felt almost deliberately staged, as if some travel deity had decided I needed the contrast. The coffee-spilled jeans, the sat nav betrayal, the moment near Deje where I genuinely wondered if I had driven into a forest that would simply absorb me forever. All of it led to this particular deck, this particular mug of tea, this particular duck procession.

I did eventually unpack, though I use the term loosely. My bag remained half-exploded in the hallway until morning. I found the village shop the next day, and the local swimming spot, and the proper footpath that wound through pine forest behind the house. But that first evening I did almost nothing at all, and it was absolutely perfect.
