About Varmland
We arrived at the stuga in Arjang in late November, when the light was already packing up for the day by half past three. The property sat among birch and pine, its red paint glowing against the early snow that had settled in thin, apologetic patches across the ground. I had expected darkness to feel oppressive at this latitude, but instead it arrived gradually, like someone dimming the lamps to set a mood. The air smelled of cold water and woodsmoke from a neighbour's chimney. The key was exactly where the instructions promised, which I mention only because my expectations for self-catering logistics have been ruined by previous experiences involving cryptic clues and once, memorably, a bird box. Inside, the stuga was warmer than I had dared hope, heated by a wood-burning stove that dominated the small living area. My partner immediately appointed himself Fire Marshal, a role he takes with the gravity of a man who has watched several YouTube tutorials and is itching to demonstrate his expertise. I let him have it. The flames caught eventually, after some muttering about kiln-dried birch and the importance of air circulation. November in Varmland is an in-between creature, neither the golden abundance of autumn nor the proper white stillness of deep winter. The lake nearby was not yet frozen, but it looked as though it was thinking about it. The trees stood bare and slightly self-conscious, like guests who have arrived at a party too early. I found this liminal quality strangely moving. There was nothing to do but be present in it, which is not a state I achieve easily. I am a person who packs itineraries, who measures value in checked boxes. The season offered no boxes. Only grey skies, occasional flurries of snow that melted on contact, and the slow realisation that I did not mind. The first evening, we walked to the lake's edge as the last light drained from the sky. The water was dark and utterly still. Somewhere in the trees, an owl made a sound like a slightly defective hinge. My inadequate footwear choice meant cold seeping through my walking boot, the one with a matching partner waiting uselessly at home. I hopped a little. I complained mildly. But I stayed, watching the horizon settle into a colour I can only describe as the precise moment before night commits to itself. Back at the stuga, the Fire Marshal had achieved a respectable blaze. We cooked something simple from supplies bought in Arjang's small supermarket, where the cashier had greeted us with the polite curiosity reserved for obvious foreigners in off-season places. The darkness outside was now complete, pressing against the windows with the weight of a season that knows its own importance. We slept early, lulled by the stove's occasional pops and the particular silence of a landscape waiting for deeper cold. I woke once in the night and mistook the moon on snow for dawn. It was two in the morning. I stood at the window anyway, watching the birch trunks shine silver, understanding something about winter's honesty that I could not have learned in summer's distractions. The season had not asked my permission to shape the experience. It had simply done its work, indifferent and generous both at once. |
