I had barely stepped off the train at Stockholm Central when the rain started, and my carefully folded map turned into a soggy mess in my jacket pocket. By the time the local bus dropped me near the Vaetoe, I was half soaked and wondering why I had not just grabbed a taxi like any sensible person. The little house sat quietly among pine trees, its wooden deck already dotted with raindrops, and I felt a bit foolish for having pictured sunny picnics the moment I booked it.

Once inside, the first thing that struck me was how light the rooms felt even on a grey afternoon. Wide windows looked straight out to the water, and the simple kitchen had everything I needed for a quick cup of tea while I waited for the clouds to shift. The owners had left a handwritten note suggesting a short coastal path that began just beyond the garden gate, so as soon as the rain eased I laced up my boots and set off.

The path hugged the shoreline, twisting between low rocks and patches of heather that still smelled sweet after the downpour. I had planned a longer loop, but the sky kept playing tricks, bright one minute and threatening the next, so I settled for wandering back and forth along the same stretch, stopping whenever the sun broke through to take photos of the little wooden jetties that bobbed in the gentle swell. A couple of locals nodded as they passed with their dogs, and I realised I had been smiling at complete strangers for no reason other than the sudden warmth on my face.

By late afternoon the temperature had climbed enough for me to peel off my jacket and sit on a flat rock with a sandwich from the local shop. Watching the ferries slide past in the distance, I caught myself thinking how rarely I actually slow down at home, and how a single change in the weather had already nudged me into doing exactly that. The walk back to the Vaetoe felt shorter than the way out, perhaps because the light had turned golden and the path no longer seemed quite so unknown.

That first evening I sat on the deck with a blanket over my knees, listening to the soft lap of water against the shore. The mishap with the map had turned into an unplanned wander along the coast that suited the changeable Swedish summer perfectly, and I already knew I would spend the next few days doing much the same thing, letting the weather decide how far I went each time.
