I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I spent twenty minutes trying to unlock the wrong door. There we were, me and the family, standing outside a charming little wooden cottage on Varmdo in Nacka, jiggling a key that absolutely refused to turn, while I delivered a passionate speech about the decline of modern craftsmanship. Turns out I was two doors down and very much trespassing on someone's Tuesday afternoon. The actual cottage, when we found it, had a bright red door that was impossible to miss. I'd somehow walked straight past it. My wife found this hilarious. My children found it grounds for never letting me navigate again.

The journey from Stockholm proper had been straightforward enough, a short ferry hop that had us all feeling rather nautical and pleased with ourselves. We'd packed far too much, as is family tradition, including a board game nobody likes and enough snacks to survive a minor siege. The archipelago scenery did that thing where you forget you're still technically in a capital city. Pine trees, granite rocks, water everywhere you looked. My daughter declared it "like Finland but better," which I suspect makes no geographical sense but felt right in the moment.

Stepping inside the cottage for the first time, that particular smell hit me. You know the one. Wood, slightly damp wool, the ghost of a thousand previous holidays. It's comforting in a way that no air freshener has ever managed to replicate. The place was bigger than it looked from outside, with enough bedrooms that the children wouldn't have to share and therefore wouldn't have to argue about who crossed whose invisible line in the night. Small victories.

I immediately claimed the bedroom with the slightly creaky floorboards, telling everyone it had "character." What it actually had was a view across the water that made me feel briefly poetic, until I realised I'd left the kettle on the hob and nearly burned the place down before we'd even unpacked. My wife raised an eyebrow. I raised a mug of tea in surrender.

The kitchen became our headquarters that first evening. Nothing complicated, just pasta and sauce from the little local shop we'd found ten minutes walk away, eaten at a wooden table that wobbled until my son folded a beer mat under one leg. We opened the windows and let the cooler September air drift through, carrying whatever it is that archipelago air carries. Salt, probably. Quietness. The absence of traffic.

I found myself standing at that window longer than necessary, watching the light change on the water, thinking about how rarely I stand anywhere doing nothing. There's something about these cottage holidays that forces a different rhythm. Nobody's rushing to an attraction or queueing for a landmark. You're just there, in a place, with people you like enough to share a bathroom with.

The children discovered a deck of cards in a drawer and taught themselves a game with rules they invented and immediately disagreed about. My wife read a book she'd been carrying around since March. I made more tea and successfully identified three different types of bird, all of which were probably seagulls if I'm honest.

By nine o'clock, everyone was yawning. Travel does that, even short distances. The children fell asleep with the ease they never manage at home. My wife and I sat on the small terrace with mugs of something warm, listening to the water and not saying much, which felt like the whole point of being there.

I still maintain that door was misleadingly similar to ours. But I'm glad we found the right one in the end.
