About Stockholm
The first thing I did once inside was unpack the bits I had picked up on the way. A crusty loaf from a small bakery near the station, some slices of mature cheese, and a tub of pickled herring that the woman behind the counter had insisted I try. The kitchen in the Muskoe was compact but perfectly laid out, with a decent hob and a fridge already humming away. I made myself a quick open sandwich, poured a glass of cold milk, and stood at the window watching the evening light settle over the nearby trees. It felt surprisingly homely for somewhere I had only just arrived. The next morning I wandered down to the local supermarket to stock up properly. Nothing fancy, just the sort of place where locals pick up their weekday essentials. I came back with fresh dill, new potatoes, and a pack of salmon fillets that looked too good to leave behind. Back at the house I attempted what I thought would be a simple pan-fried dinner. The dill went everywhere except where I intended it, and the potatoes took longer than expected, but the end result was edible and oddly satisfying. I ate it at the little table on the porch, listening to the quiet hum of the neighbourhood. Later that afternoon I found a small weekend market a short walk away. Stalls offered everything from cloudberry jam to smoked sausage, and I treated myself to a cardamom bun that was still warm from the oven. Sitting on a bench with coffee in a paper cup, I watched families buying their weekend treats and felt a gentle tug of envy for people who get to do this every week. My own attempt at replicating that cardamom bun back at the Muskoe the following day was less successful. The dough refused to rise properly and the finished buns were more like dense little rocks than the pillowy things I had bought. Still, they tasted fine with another cup of coffee, and I found myself laughing at my own kitchen optimism. By the third evening I had settled into a rhythm of market visits and slow cooking experiments. One night I tried making pyttipanna with leftover potatoes and whatever vegetables I had left. It was not pretty, but it was warm and filling, and I ate it straight from the pan while rain tapped against the windows. There is something quietly reassuring about learning to feed yourself in a new place, even when the results are far from Instagram-worthy. The Muskoe, with its simple kitchen and nearby shops, turned out to be the perfect place to make those small, slightly messy discoveries. |
