About Stockholm
The first thing that struck me was the quiet. Not the awkward, oppressive kind, but the proper Swedish countryside quiet where you can actually hear yourself think. The house sat there looking terribly pleased with itself, all red wooden cladding and white trim, the sort of place that makes you feel instantly underdressed in your crumpled travel clothes. I half expected a friendly neighbour to wander over and judge my life choices. Nobody did, which was both a relief and a tiny disappointment. I wrestled my suitcase up the steps, still muttering about the key incident, and pushed open the door. The smell hit me first - that particular blend of pine, old wood, and something faintly reminiscent of someone's grandmother's front room. In the best possible way, I should add. The living area was all warm tones and practical Swedish simplicity, with a wood-burning stove sitting there like it was waiting for me to prove I could actually light a fire without setting off alarms. I made a mental note to attempt that later, preferably before darkness fell and I had to admit defeat. The kitchen was immediately my favourite sort of space - functional but not trying too hard, with enough equipment to make me feel slightly guilty about my usual toast-based holiday diet. I opened the fridge out of pure nosiness and found it empty, which felt like both a challenge and a promise. The local shop in Herrang village, apparently just a short wander away, would be seeing a lot of me. I am not ashamed to say I mentally composed a shopping list involving an irresponsible quantity of pickled herring and crispbread. I dumped my bags in the main bedroom and caught my reflection in the window. Travel hair, slightly wild eyes, the general aura of someone who had been in transit for most of the day. But outside, through that same window, I could see proper Swedish woodland stretching away, and beyond that, I knew the archipelago was waiting. The thought made me grin like an idiot. I had done absolutely nothing yet, and already this felt like exactly the sort of place where you remember how to slow down. The bathroom was unexpectedly luxurious, all clean lines and excellent water pressure, which I tested immediately because some things cannot wait. Then I made myself the worst cup of tea of my life using some mysterious Swedish teabag I found in a cupboard, and carried it out to that veranda where my key had so nearly been lost forever. The evening light was doing that magical Scandinavian thing, all golden and lingering, and somewhere in the distance a bird was making a noise I could not identify. I did not try to. I just sat there, tea going cold, feeling deeply smug about my life decisions. Tomorrow I would explore properly. I would find the local swimming spot I had read about, maybe attempt to buy groceries like a functioning adult, possibly even light that stove without incident. But for now, I was perfectly content to sit with my terrible tea and my grass-stained trousers, listening to nothing much at all, and feeling very glad indeed that I had finally arrived. |
