There it sat, all red timber and white trim, nestled among birch trees with the sort of understated Swedish charm that makes you feel immediately calmer. The key was exactly where Novasol said it would be, which felt almost miraculous given our navigational performance so far. The door opened with that satisfying weight that old wooden doors have, the kind that makes you feel properly shut in from the world. Inside, the smell hit me first. Not the musty damp I had half-feared from a cottage in early spring, but something clean and woody, like pine needles and fresh air that had been patiently waiting for someone to arrive. My daughter immediately claimed the loft bedroom, which involved a ladder she insisted on calling "the staircase" with the dignity only an eight-year-old can muster. My son had already discovered the wood-burning stove and was asking questions about it that I absolutely could not answer.

I made that cup of tea in the kitchen, which was compact in the way that Scandinavian design manages to make compact feel intentional rather than apologetic. Everything had its place. That is the thing about cottage holidays, I think. They ask so little of you. No grand plans required, no pressure to be constantly entertained. Just space, and quiet, and the gentle rhythm of making meals together and lighting the fire as evening comes in.

I took another sip of tea and did not mention to my partner that I had, in fact, seen the correct turning almost immediately and chosen to ignore it. Some truths can stay between a person and a judgmental sheep.
