About Stockholm
I have never been brilliant with directions, so it will surprise absolutely no one that I managed to get myself gloriously lost somewhere between Stockholm and what I thought was the turning for Hallstavik. There I was, trundling along in my hire car, absolutely convinced I was following the sat nav's every instruction, when I suddenly found myself staring at a sign for a place that definitely was not on any of my paperwork. Turns out I had misread "Herrang" as something entirely different, and spent a good twenty minutes driving in what I can only describe as a very scenic circle through the Swedish countryside. The sheep looked thoroughly unimpressed.

By the time I actually pulled up to the property, I was in that peculiar state of mild delirium that comes from too much coffee, not enough proper lunch, and the quiet humiliation of realising your spatial awareness has not improved since you were seventeen. But then I stepped out of the car, and something rather wonderful happened. The sun was doing that low, golden thing it does in late afternoon here, and everything just stopped. The trees, the little garden, the wooden facade of the house itself - it all looked so peacefully settled into its surroundings that I felt my shoulders drop about three inches without my permission.

The key was exactly where it was meant to be, which already felt like a small miracle given my navigational performance. I pushed open the door and was hit by that particular smell of a well-kept wooden house: something between pine and fresh air and the faint suggestion that someone sensible has been looking after the place for years. I dumped my bag with rather more enthusiasm than grace and immediately opened every window I could find. The breeze that came through was that perfect Swedish summer temperature - warm enough to feel like a proper holiday, cool enough to remind you that you are definitely not in the Med.

I had brought three books with me, which even I recognised as optimistic given I was only staying a week. But there is something about a place like this that makes reading feel less like a leisure activity and more like a moral obligation. I found a spot on the little wooden deck where the afternoon sun pooled, dragged out a chair that creaked in a reassuring rather than alarming way, and promptly did absolutely nothing for two solid hours. A bee investigated my cup of tea. I watched a small bird I could not identify perform what looked like an elaborate personal grooming routine on a nearby branch. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked once, thought better of it, and stopped.

The local shop in Hallstavik became my morning pilgrimage. I would wander down in the sort of slow, purposeless way that would have horrified my usual London self, buy some bread and cheese and whatever looked interesting, and wander back with no particular urgency. The woman behind the counter started recognising me by day three, which gave me an unreasonably warm feeling. I am not sure what I expected - perhaps some dramatic Swedish wilderness experience - but what I got was something far more valuable. The gentle rhythm of days that asked nothing of me except my presence.

I did explore a little, of course. There is a lake not far from the property where I sat on day four and watched someone else fishing with the kind of patience I have never possessed. I walked along paths that were clearly made for people with sturdier boots and better balance than mine, and turned back when they got too ambitious. I found a spot by some rocks where the sun collected like a physical thing, and read the same paragraph of my novel four times because I kept getting distracted by a butterfly that seemed determined to land on my knee.

By the end of the week, I had finished one and a half books, acquired a mild tan in that patchy English way, and developed what I can only describe as an emotional attachment to my particular deck chair. I had not seen any of Stockholm's famous sights, had not taken a single photograph worth showing anyone, and could not have been more content with both facts. There is a particular joy in doing very little in the sunshine that I had somehow forgotten existed, and this strange little corner of Sweden reminded me with the gentle persistence of good weather and comfortable silence.

On my last morning, I sat with my final cup of tea and watched the same bee from earlier in the week, or perhaps its cousin, investigate the same patch of flowers. I thought about my earlier self, frantically circling those country roads, convinced I was ruining everything before it had begun. I had been so wrong, and it was such a relief.
