About Stockholm
The thing about driving on the right is that you think you've got it sorted until a roundabout appears out of nowhere and suddenly you're indicating left while everyone else is going right. That was us, twenty minutes from Stockholm's centre, me gripping the steering wheel like it owed me money and my other half doing that helpful thing where they grip the door handle and breathe very loudly through their nose.

We'd picked up the hire car at Arlanda after a flight that felt longer than it was, mostly because our youngest had discovered the in-flight magazine's sudoku section and needed help with every single puzzle. The drive to Djurhamn should have been straightforward. It wasn't. We took a wrong turn somewhere near Gustavsberg and ended up in a car park overlooking what I initially thought was our destination but was actually a very nice-looking garden centre. I reversed out with what I hoped looked like confidence and what actually felt like pure, unfiltered panic.

When we finally found the right road, threading through pines that seemed to lean in and watch us pass, everything slowed down. The tarmac gave way to gravel. The gravel gave way to a proper little lane, the kind that makes you check your mirrors even though you haven't seen another car in ten minutes. And then there it was, red wooden walls and white trim, sitting among birch trees with the sort of casual beauty that Swedish summer cottages seem to achieve without even trying.

I'd worried it would feel too isolated, too far from anything. That worry dissolved the moment I stepped onto the decking and heard nothing but water lapping somewhere nearby and what I'm fairly certain was a woodpecker having a go at a pine trunk. The air smelled of salt and warm wood, that particular combination you get when the archipelago meets the forest.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, though getting it out required the sort of finger gymnastics that made me grateful nobody was filming. Inside, the place had that lived-in, unpretentious feel that rental photos never quite capture properly. A kitchen that had clearly seen actual cooking, not just styling. Windows that framed greenery like deliberate paintings. My daughter immediately claimed the loft bedroom, which meant my son immediately claimed he'd wanted it first, which meant we had our first proper holiday negotiation before the suitcases were even open.

I made tea with the whistling kettle while everyone else explored. Stood at the kitchen window watching late afternoon light filter through leaves and thought about how rarely I stand still like this at home. There's always something urgent, something that needs doing. Here, urgency felt like a concept from another country entirely.

We walked down to the water before dinner, following a path that was probably official but felt like a secret. The shore was rocky in that proper archipelago way, no soft sand to pamper you, just granite and bladderwrack and the kind of clear, cold water that makes your ankles ache. The children threw stones with the solemn concentration children bring to such tasks. My other half and I sat on a flat rock and didn't say much, which was the best kind of not saying much.

That evening we grilled sausages on the little barbecue and ate outside until the mosquitoes politely suggested we move indoors. Someone had left a pack of cards in a drawer. We played something approximating rummy while the light stayed stubbornly present outside, that Swedish summer refusal to properly get dark that still disorients me no matter how many times I experience it.

I kept waiting to feel restless, to need entertainment or distraction. It didn't come. The mishap of the roundabout, the wrong turn, the garden centre detour - they'd burned off whatever frantic energy I'd carried with me. What remained was simpler. Slower. The particular pleasure of being somewhere that asks nothing of you except presence.
