About Soedermanland
I have never been so relieved to see a red wooden house in my entire life. Twelve hours after leaving Luton, having endured a delayed flight, a train that seemed to stop at every field in Sweden, and a bus driver who definitely took the scenic route, I finally rocked up in Trosa. And then promptly dropped my rucksack straight into a puddle.

It was not even a dramatic puddle. Just a modest, unassuming bit of roadside water that I somehow failed to notice while fumbling for the key safe code. My phone, my snacks, and my last clean pair of socks all took an impromptu bath. I stood there, jet-lagged and slightly hysterical, watching a soggy packet of digestives float away like a tragic little raft. Welcome to Soedermanland, I thought. Absolutely smashing start.

The thing about arriving somewhere after dark is that you never quite trust your first impressions. The cottage looked charming enough in the glow of my phone torch, all traditional Falu red and white trim, with a proper little porch that begged for a morning coffee. But I was too busy wringing out my hoodie to appreciate it properly. I shoved through the door, dumped my sodden luggage, and promptly fell onto the nearest sofa with the dramatic flair of someone who had just completed an expedition rather than a fairly standard European journey.

Morning, however, changed everything. I woke to actual birdsong, not the aggressive pigeons of my London flat, and pushed open the curtains to find the cottage bathed in that particular Scandinavian light that makes everything look slightly magical. The garden sloped gently down towards trees, and beyond them I could just glimpse the glint of water. Trosa sits right on the Baltic coast, and even from here I could smell that clean, briny air that instantly makes you feel healthier than you actually are.

I made terrible coffee in the little kitchen, spilling grounds everywhere because the measuring spoon had apparently vanished into the same dimension as my spatial awareness. No matter. I took my mug outside in my still-damp socks and just stood there, breathing. The cottage had a proper wooden deck with a table that looked handmade, slightly wonky, utterly perfect. Someone had planted herbs in terracotta pots along the railing, and a bumblebee the size of a small helicopter was already doing its rounds.

What struck me most was the quiet. Not silence exactly, because there was plenty of life going on, but a complete absence of that low-grade urban hum I had stopped noticing years ago. No traffic drone, no distant sirens, just wind in the trees and the occasional creak of what I chose to believe was a friendly forest spirit rather than an ageing fence post.

I wandered down to check out the local area, still in my unfortunate socks, and found Trosa's harbour within easy walking distance. The town itself is one of those impossibly picturesque spots with wooden houses in every shade of pastel, cobbled streets that threaten to break your ankle, and a general atmosphere of having wandered into a slightly twee postcard. I loved it instantly. A fisherman was unloading his morning catch, gulls were being predictably obnoxious, and I bought a cinnamon bun from a bakery that smelled like everything good in the world.

Back at the cottage, I finally unpacked properly, hanging my damp clothes on the little drying rack with the optimism of someone who has not yet learned Swedish weather patterns. The living room had a wood-burning stove that I immediately decided I would master, despite having never successfully lit a fire in my life. There were books on the shelves, actual physical books, including a very battered crime novel in Swedish that I pretended I might attempt.

By evening, I had achieved two things: a small burn on my thumb from the stove, and a profound sense of contentment. I sat on that wonky deck with a glass of wine, watching the light fade across the garden, and thought about how quickly a soggy rucksack disaster had transformed into this. Travel does that, I suppose. It humbles you with puddles and delayed transport, then rewards you with bumblebees and perfect cinnamon buns.

Tomorrow I might attempt the coastal path, or perhaps just sit here longer. The cottage had already started feeling like somewhere I could happily disappear for weeks, and I had only just arrived. That is the magic of places like Trosa, I am learning. They do not rush you. They simply wait, red and welcoming, for however long it takes you to catch up.

My socks were still damp, mind. Some things, it seems, even Swedish magic cannot fix overnight.
