About Soedermanland
I have never been so grateful to see a red wooden house in all my life. After six hours of driving from Stockholm, two wrong turns near Nykoping, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that insisted Trosa was somehow in the Baltic Sea, we finally crawled up the gravel drive of our little holiday home. The kids were asleep in the back, my partner was giving me the look that said "never again," and I had just spent the last twenty minutes convinced I'd booked a cottage in entirely the wrong country. But there it was. Red paint, white trim, little porch with two chairs facing the trees. Exactly like the photo, which frankly surprised me more than it should have.

The mishap came thirty seconds later. I grabbed what I thought was our door key from the envelope and marched up to the porch like a man who knew what he was doing. The key went in, turned beautifully, and I pushed open the door with a flourish worthy of a property programme reveal. Except it wasn't our door. I'd walked straight into the garden shed, which some thoughtful previous guest had left unlocked. My partner's laugh echoed across the garden while I stood there surrounded by lawnmowers and fishing rods, wondering if I could just live in the shed and pretend this was the plan all along.

Our actual cottage, mercifully, was the identical one five metres to the left. The real key worked. The real door opened onto a proper kitchen that smelled faintly of pine and the previous occupant's coffee. I dumped the bags, made a mental note to check house numbers in future, and finally let myself breathe.

First impressions? It felt like walking into someone's well-loved summer place rather than a rental. The wooden floors had that particular squeak in the hallway that made you tiptoe after nine o'clock. The kitchen window framed nothing but green, just trees and more trees, with a glimpse of water if you leaned at the right angle. I found myself doing that a lot that first evening, leaning and looking, cup of tea in hand, watching the light change over what I later learned was the archipelago's edge.

The children woke up grumpy and confused, as children do after car naps, but the discovery of the little loft bedroom changed everything. They claimed it immediately, arguing over who got which mattress on the floor, while I stood at the bottom of the steep stairs wondering how we'd manage midnight toilet trips without casualties. The answer, I discovered that first night, was very carefully and with much complaining.

We didn't do much that evening. Someone walked to the nearby shop for milk and came back with unnecessary biscuits and a local newspaper I couldn't read. We sat on those porch chairs as the light faded, properly this time, not in a shed, and listened to nothing much at all. A dog barked somewhere across the water. My partner finally stopped giving me the look. I thought about how I'd rushed us here, stressed about timing and directions and whether I'd ruined the holiday before it started, and how none of it mattered now we were sitting in the quiet with biscuits.

The shed key went back in the envelope. I checked twice.
