About Smaland
The mishap, when it came, was almost impressively stupid. We'd been given a key code for a lockbox, and I was so pleased with myself for remembering it that I completely failed to notice which of the three nearly identical red cabins was actually ours. I marched up to the wrong one, punched in the code with theatrical confidence, and stood there baffled when nothing happened. I tried again. I tried it backwards. I may have whispered "open sesame" at one point. It took a friendly local walking his dog to gently indicate, in excellent English, that I was attempting to break into someone's actual home. The correct cabin was twenty metres further down, hidden behind a rather strategically placed birch tree. I laughed, he laughed, my partner pretended to be very interested in a mushroom. But then we found it. Ours. And whatever embarrassment I'd been nursing evaporated the moment I pushed open the door. The place smelled of pine and something else I couldn't name, something clean and ancient at once. The living area was simple but warm, all wood panelling and soft lamplight, with windows that seemed to deliberately frame the forest like paintings. I stood there with my ridiculous wheelie bag still in hand, suddenly aware that I'd been holding my breath. My partner squeezed past me and made a small sound, the kind people make when they see something unexpectedly lovely. The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, not one of those holiday rentals where you open a drawer and find a single bent fork and a can opener from 1973. We made coffee immediately, because the Swedans have this figured out and we were trying to respect local customs. I took mine out onto the little wooden deck, barefoot despite the September chill, and watched the light filter through the trees in that particular way it does in Smaland, all golden and sideways and slightly magical. There's a small lake nearby, apparently, and walking paths that wind through forest proper enough to get properly lost in. We spotted a red squirrel on the drive in, which I mention only because I've lived in cities long enough to find a squirrel genuinely thrilling. The area around Loftahammar is quiet in that deep, settled way that makes your own thoughts louder. I found myself thinking about how rarely I stop moving, how my default setting seems to be "slightly frantic," and how maybe that's why I'd tried to break into someone else's cabin with such misplaced certainty. The forest doesn't care about your to-do list. The pine trees have been here centuries; they'll be here when you're long gone. It's humbling in the gentlest possible way. We didn't do much that first evening. Made a simple dinner from supplies we'd picked up in Vastervik, opened a bottle of wine, sat with the windows open to let the cool air in. Somewhere an owl started up, and we both grinned at each other like children. I kept expecting to feel restless, to need entertainment or distraction, but the stillness here is its own kind of activity. It asks something of you. It waits. Tomorrow we'll explore properly, find the lake, perhaps attempt a swim if we're feeling brave. But for now, I'm sitting here with cold feet and warm coffee, listening to my partner hum something tuneless in the kitchen, and feeling something I can only describe as the opposite of satnav anxiety. We've arrived, properly arrived, and the birch tree that hid our cabin now feels less like an obstacle and more like a gentle Swedish joke at my expense. I'm laughing with it, not at it. That's the difference, I think. |
