About Smaland
I should have known the holiday had truly begun when I managed to leave my suitcase on the train platform at Norrkoping. There I was, watching it sit forlornly by a bin as the doors slid shut and the train pulled away towards Monsteras. My partner's face was a picture of long-suffering patience, the sort of expression that says "I married this person" with a silent sigh. We spent the next hour on the phone to lost luggage, me apologising profusely, them already mentally unpacking their own bag to lend me pyjamas. By the time we collected the wretched thing from a sleepy station master in Monsteras, I had vowed to travel with nothing but a toothbrush and the clothes on my back for the rest of my days. A vow I broke approximately forty-eight hours later when I overpacked for a trip to the local shop.

The drive from Monsteras station to our little holiday home took us through proper Smaland countryside, all forests and glittering lakes and red wooden houses that looked like they'd been painted by someone with a very steady hand and a great deal of patience. The roads were quiet enough that I kept checking we hadn't accidentally driven onto a private track. When we finally pulled up to the property, nestled among birch trees with the lake just visible through the trunks, I felt something in my shoulders drop that I hadn't even realised I'd been holding up.

The house itself was one of those classic Swedish wooden numbers, painted that particular shade of red that makes you wonder why we bother with any other colour for countryside buildings. A proper veranda wrapped around the front, already catching the afternoon sun, and I could see a couple of weathered wooden chairs that looked like they had supported the bottoms of several generations of holidaymakers. The key was exactly where the instructions said it would be, which felt like a small miracle given my track record that day.

Inside, everything smelled of pine and cleanliness. The kitchen had that pleasing simplicity of Scandinavian design, nothing unnecessary but everything you might actually want. I immediately opened every cupboard to see what treasures awaited, as is my ritual, and was delighted to find a proper coffee maker and a stash of mugs that looked like they'd seen some stories. The living area had big windows facing the lake, and I knew without discussing it that this would become my reading spot for the week. My partner headed straight for the bedroom to test the mattress, reporting back with a thumbs up that suggested at least one of us would sleep well.

We unpacked with the lazy efficiency of people who have nowhere to be. I put my recovered suitcase in the corner with perhaps more force than necessary, still slightly cross with it for its earlier abandonment. Then we did what I can only describe as a very slow wander around the place. Down to the water's edge, where a little jetty jutted out and a rowing boat sat tied up looking hopeful. Back through the trees, where the late afternoon light came through the leaves in that particular way that makes everything look slightly golden and unreal. We found a patch of wild strawberries near the boundary, tiny and impossibly sweet, and ate them standing there like a pair of overgrown children.

That first evening, we sat on the veranda with cups of coffee that became glasses of wine as the light stretched and faded. The silence was broken only by birds and the occasional distant sound of a boat motor. I found myself talking about work for perhaps thirty seconds before my partner gave me a look, and I trailed off, laughing at my own inability to switch off. "We're here to do very little," they reminded me, and I nodded, already feeling the truth of it settle in.

The sun barely seemed to set that far north in summer, just dipping low and lingering, painting the sky in soft colours that lasted for hours. We watched it without speaking much, which for two people who normally fill silence with chatter felt like its own small achievement. Somewhere in the trees, an owl started up, premature and optimistic.

I thought about that suitcase, left behind in my rush to board. How sometimes the things we cling to most tightly are the ones we can most afford to lose for a little while. How a week of doing very little in the sunshine might be exactly what a person needs to remember who they are when nobody is asking anything of them. The coffee had gone cold in my hands. I didn't mind one bit.
