About Smaland
The thing about driving to Smaland is that you genuinely forget how massive Sweden is. We'd set off from Gotland feeling chipper, stopped for what I thought was a quick fika in Jonkoping, and then somehow spent forty-five minutes circling the same roundabout because I was too proud to admit my phone had died and I'd been relying on my partner's directions, which turned out to be directions to a completely different cottage three villages over. By the time we actually found the turning for Hjaertlanda, I'd developed a twitch every time I saw a red wooden house.

But then we crunched down the gravel track, and there it was. Proper Smaland forest pressing in on both sides, birch and pine so thick you half expected a moose to wander out and judge your parking. The cottage sat back from the little lake, painted that deep Falun red with white trim, looking like something from a children's book I'd have dismissed as unrealistically picturesque. My first thought, embarrassingly, was that we'd accidentally driven onto someone's private estate and were about to be chased off by an angry Swede with a very specific sense of boundary.

I need to back up slightly. The mishap, because there always is one with us. We'd stopped at a supermarket in Varnamo to stock up, and in my bleary post-roundabout state, I'd managed to buy what I thought was a lovely local cheese but turned out to be something called "mesost," which is technically cheese in the same way that Marmite is technically food. I discovered this by opening it triumphantly on the cottage steps, taking an enthusiastic bite, and experiencing a flavour I can only describe as caramelised regret. My partner laughed so hard she dropped the actual keys in the grass, and we spent ten minutes crawling around in the twilight while mosquitoes conducted what felt like a military assessment of our bare ankles.

Finding the keys was when I first noticed the quiet. Not silence exactly, because there was birdsong and the faint lap of water and something rustling in the undergrowth that I chose to believe was a hedgehog. But that particular quality of stillness you only get when you're properly away from roads and towns and the background hum of other people's lives. The cottage porch had two wooden chairs that looked like they'd been there since the seventies and would probably outlast anything I'd ever owned.

Inside smelled of pine and something faintly smoky, like the wood burner had been recently used. The kitchen was compact but somehow had everything arranged with that Swedish practicality that makes you feel slightly ashamed of your own kitchen's chaos. I kept opening cupboards just to see what was in them, which my partner found suspicious until she started doing it too. The living room window framed the lake perfectly, accidentally or deliberately, I couldn't tell, and we stood there with our bags still unpacked watching the last light go silvery on the water.

I caught myself thinking about how I'd describe this to my mother, who thinks anywhere without a reliable phone signal is basically the wilderness, and realised I was already constructing the experience before I'd had it. Old habit. The mesost was still sitting on the step where I'd abandoned it, and somehow that felt right. A small ridiculous thing marking the start of something that already felt like it might be properly good.

We made tea with bags we'd brought from home, standing in the kitchen with the window open to the forest smell, not talking much, just being there. The bed upstairs was made up with striped linen that felt slightly stiff in that way clean holiday linen does, and I fell asleep to the sound of something splashing in the lake that I decided was definitely a fish and not anything that required further investigation.

That was our first night. The cheese went in the bin the next morning, but the memory of it, and the keys in the grass, and the particular blue of that evening light through the trees, stayed. Some arrivals are just like that. Slightly chaotic, quietly transformative, and already half-nostalgic before they've even properly begun.
