About Smaland
I have never been brilliant with sat navs, so it was hardly a surprise when ours announced we had arrived at Hallaryd while we were still bouncing down a forestry track, surrounded by pine trees and a concerning number of moose warning signs. My partner, ever the optimist, suggested we press on. I, ever the realist, suggested we might be about to become a local legend. Twenty minutes of reversing later, we found the proper lane, and there it was: a proper red Swedish cottage with white trim, sitting pretty among the trees like something from a postcard I would later buy and fail to send.

The owners had left the key in a little wooden box with a combination lock, which I managed to open on the third attempt after realising I had been reading the code upside down. Travel fatigue, I told myself. Inside, the place smelled of pine and something faintly herby, perhaps from the little garden patch out back. The floors creaked in all the right places, and the kitchen had one of those proper wood-burning stoves that I immediately decided I would master, despite having failed with every similar stove since 2019.

We had arrived in late July with grand plans for walking. The weather app had shown nothing but sun, and I had packed accordingly: one pair of shorts, three t-shirts, and a misplaced confidence that Smaland in summer behaved itself. The first morning proved me half right. We set off down a lane that turned into a proper trail, winding through mixed woodland towards the coast. The undergrowth was thick with bilberry bushes, and we stopped every few minutes to pick them, fingers stained purple within the hour. I felt rather smug about this, as if foraging made me a proper outdoors type rather than someone who normally buys berries in plastic punnets.

The trail opened onto rocky shoreline with that particular Baltic stillness, the water flat and grey-green, stretching towards islands we could just make out on the horizon. We walked for hours, clambering over granite slabs, finding little inlets where the water was improbably warm in the shallows. I waded in up to my knees and immediately regretted not bringing proper swimming things, though my partner pointed out that my underwear was essentially the same material as my shorts, and nobody was watching anyway. This is the kind of logic that passes for holiday wisdom.

By the third day, the weather had turned. Not dramatically, not with thunder or drama, but with a steady grey drizzle that the Swedes clearly expected and we had not. Our planned long coastal hike became a shorter wander through the immediate woodland, where the paths turned muddy and the mosquitoes, previously absent, emerged with what I can only describe as professional enthusiasm. I had packed insect repellent but left it in the car, which was now a twenty-minute squelch away. We retreated to Hallaryd with our tails between our legs, and I spent the afternoon on the covered porch with a book, watching the rain make patterns on the little garden patch.

The weather broke properly the following morning, and we set out again with renewed purpose, walking a different trail that looped through marshy ground on boardwalks before rising to another stretch of coast. The rocks were slick from the rain, and I performed an undignified slide that left me seated abruptly but unhurt, laughing at myself while my partner pretended not to have filmed it. We found a sheltered cove where the sun had warmed the stones, and lay there like lizards, recovering our dignity and our energy.

What struck me most, looking back, was how the changed weather had forced us to slow down. Without the drizzle, we would have marched on, ticking off miles, perhaps missing the cove entirely. Hallaryd itself became more than a base; it became the place we returned to, damp and satisfied, to light that wood stove I never quite mastered, and to plan tomorrow's walk with the modest wisdom of people who had learned that Smaland gives you what it gives you, and that accepting this is rather the point.
