About Skane
The mishap came at the final junction. I was navigating, which should have been my partner's first warning. "Left at the pine tree," I'd said, pointing at what was clearly, in retrospect, a telegraph pole. We bumped down a gravel track for a good ten minutes before reaching a farmyard where a very patient man in overalls explained, in flawless English, that we were in his driveway and the holiday home was back the other way. I laughed it off with what I hoped was charming British self-deprecation. My partner laughed too, though hers had a certain edge to it. But then we found it. And I mean actually found it, tucked among birch trees with that particular stillness you only get in proper Swedish countryside. The house sat there like it had been waiting, all traditional timber cladding and a steeply pitched roof that looked ready for proper snow. A red wooden cottage, basically, though somehow more elegant than that sounds. I stood in the gravel driveway with my door still open, one foot on the ground, just looking. The late afternoon light was doing that long, golden thing it does at this latitude, stretching shadows across the grass. My partner had already got out. She was smiling properly now, the navigation incident apparently forgiven. The key was in a lockbox, which opened with a satisfying clunk. Inside, the smell hit first: that clean, woody scent of a place that's been properly aired, not artificially freshened. Wooden floors, white walls, a kitchen that managed to be both modern and somehow rustic. I immediately opened the wrong cupboard looking for glasses, finding instead an impressive collection of board games that suggested previous guests had known how to pass dark evenings. The living area had a wood-burning stove that I instantly decided I was qualified to operate, despite minimal evidence. I walked to the back windows. The garden sloped gently down to a small pond, perfectly still, bordered by rushes. Beyond that, fields. Just fields, green and yellow, rolling towards a tree line in the distance. No other buildings visible. Somewhere a bird called, one of those Scandinavian birds that sounds more musical than British ones, though perhaps I was already romanticising. My partner had found the bedroom, reported that the beds were made with that tight, tucked-in precision the Scandinavians do so well. "Come and see the bathroom," she called. I found her admiring a shower that actually looked like someone had designed it for humans rather than as an afterthought. Heated towel rail, proper tiles, the works. I made tea with the kettle, because some habits survive any journey. Carried my mug outside to the small terrace, sat on a wooden chair that creaked appropriately. The evening was cooling now, that fresh smell of pine and grass and something else, something I couldn't name. My partner joined me, tea in hand, and we sat in the kind of comfortable silence that follows a long drive when you've finally arrived somewhere that feels right. I thought about the wrong turn, the farmyard, the man in overalls. Sometimes you need to go the wrong way to appreciate arriving. Or perhaps I was just tired and being philosophical with cheap tea. Either way, sitting there as the light faded and the first stars appeared in that enormous Swedish sky, I knew we'd found something good. The real holiday could start tomorrow. For now, this was enough. |
