About Skane
The turn-off for Olofstrom crept up sooner than expected, a modest sign pointing us away from the main road and into a landscape of lakes and forests that felt instantly slower, softer, somehow more forgiving of idiots with flat phones. The roads narrowed. The pine trees thickened. We passed a red wooden house with a flagpole flying the Swedish banner, then another, then a glimpse of water through the trees that made the children finally stop asking if we were nearly there. Finding the cottage meant trusting my partner's memory of the booking photographs, which I have to admit he did with irritating accuracy. A gravel track, a wooden gate, and then there it was: a traditional Swedish holiday home in that particular shade of Falu red that makes everything look like it belongs in a picture book. White trim. Small windows with proper shutters. A covered terrace where someone, presumably us, would later sit with a cup of something warm and pretend to read while actually dozing. The key was exactly where the instructions said, which felt almost suspicious given our journey so far. I wrestled with the lock for a good three minutes, convinced myself it was broken, then realised I had it upside down. My partner very kindly said nothing. The door opened onto that particular smell of wooden holiday cottages everywhere: slightly musty, entirely comforting, layered with the ghost of a thousand previous family dinners and rainy afternoons spent playing cards. The children bolted past me, claiming bedrooms with the territorial urgency of explorers planting flags. I stood in the living area and properly looked around. Exposed wooden beams. A wood-burning stove that I immediately imagined us using, despite it being August and perfectly mild. A kitchen that was compact in that efficient Scandinavian way, everything within sensible reach, nothing unnecessary. Through the windows, the garden sloped down towards trees, and beyond them I could hear rather than see water moving somewhere close. My partner found the coffee maker and performed that small ritual of working out foreign appliances, which he genuinely enjoys and I genuinely do not understand. Within minutes the cottage smelled of proper coffee, and we stood on that covered terrace with mismatched mugs, still slightly stiff from the drive, watching a magpie work its way across the lawn with important business to attend to. I thought about the charger sitting uselessly in a Danish car park. I thought about the paper map in the boot. I thought about how I would almost certainly do something similarly daft on the return journey, because I am apparently incapable of learning. Then I took a proper breath of pine-scented air, felt the warmth of the mug in my hands, and heard the children laughing about something upstairs, probably involving a spider or a squeaky floorboard. The phone could wait. The map could stay in the boot. We had a week of this: slow mornings, lake swims, forest walks, the particular pleasure of cooking simple meals in a small kitchen and eating them outside while the light lingers late into the evening. Skane was doing what it does best, wrapping itself around us with quiet, unshowy welcome, and I was absolutely ready to be wrapped. |
