About Skane
I have never been so grateful to see a gravel driveway in all my life. Seven hours after leaving Luton, having navigated three airports, one delayed flight to Copenhagen, a train to Malmo, and then a hire car that smelled faintly of fish, I finally turned onto the lane towards Gyllebo. My partner was asleep in the passenger seat, mouth open, snoring in that particular way he denies. I was running purely on airport coffee and stubbornness. And then, in my exhausted triumph, I drove straight past the turning.

There is a special kind of foolishness that only reveals itself at the end of a very long day. I had to reverse fifty metres down a narrow lane bordered by hawthorn, my companion now awake and offering unhelpful commentary, while a local on a bicycle watched with the polite, blank expression that Swedes have perfected. I waved apologetically. He nodded, as if this happened daily. Perhaps it does.

The cottage sat at the end of a track, yellow-painted with white trim, surrounded by grass that had clearly enjoyed the Skane summer more than I had enjoyed anything in recent hours. Osterlen, this corner of south-eastern Skane, is known as Sweden's Provence, which sounds like tourism board nonsense until you see it. The light really does fall differently here, softer somehow, catching the rolling fields and the distant glimpse of the Baltic. Even through my windscreen, smeared with motorway grime and my own fingerprints, I could see it.

I had planned a dramatic arrival, sweeping open the door with a flourish, perhaps finding a local cheese waiting as reward for my endurance. Instead, I spent ten minutes failing to operate the key safe, which was apparently designed by someone who disliked both keys and safes. The code worked on the third attempt, by which point I had developed a crick in my neck and a profound respect for Swedish security consciousness.

The door opened onto a kitchen that smelled of pine and disuse, in the pleasant way holiday cottages do. Someone had left a small jug of wildflowers on the table. I stood there with my suitcase still in the car, too tired to move, simply absorbing the quiet. Proper quiet, not the strained hush of a city at 3am, but the layered stillness of countryside where the only immediate sound was a bumblebee against the windowpane.

My partner, ever practical, had already located the coffee maker and was making hopeful noises about the supermarket in Simrishamn, ten minutes east. I waved him off and wandered through to the living room, where low ceilings and white walls framed windows looking out towards Gyllebo lake. The furniture was simple, comfortable, the kind that does not demand attention. I found myself sitting on the sofa without remembering deciding to do so.

There is a particular vulnerability to arriving somewhere new after a journey. All your usual defences, the routines and familiarities that prop you up, have been stripped away by motorways and departure lounges. You are reduced to your essentials, tired and slightly emotional, standing in a stranger's kitchen with a jug of flowers and no idea where the mugs are kept. I felt it then, that unguardedness, and rather than fight it I let myself feel properly pleased to be there. Ridiculously pleased, given I had done nothing yet but get lost and fail at a key safe.

The evening light was turning golden, the long Skane evening stretching out before me. Somewhere outside, a bird I could not identify was making enthusiastic noises. My partner returned with bread and cheese and something he claimed was herring but looked optimistic. We ate on the small terrace, watching the sky shift through colours I would later learn to expect, the slow Scandinavian dusk that makes you feel time has loosened its grip.

I thought about the journey, the wrong turn, the bicycle man, the fish-scented car. None of it mattered now. The cottage had folded around us, warm and uncomplicated, and outside the Osterlen darkness was gathering gently, without hurry, over fields that would wait patiently for morning.
