About Skane
The mishap came thirty seconds after parking. Eager to stretch my legs and perhaps win back some goodwill, I leapt from the car, strode purposefully toward what I assumed was the front door, and walked straight into a shed. Not the house. A shed. The actual entrance was three metres to the left, marked by a charming little porch and some potted geraniums that seemed to judge me silently. My partner laughed for the first time since Malmo, so I counted it a victory of sorts. Stepping inside proper, the first thing that struck me was the smell. Old wood, clean linen, and something faintly of cinnamon that I later discovered was a candle left by the previous guests. The living room had that particular quality of Scandinavian simplicity that makes you immediately conscious of how much unnecessary clutter you have at home. A worn sofa faced windows looking out toward fields, and I felt an almost physical urge to sink into it and cease all productive activity. We had arrived in late afternoon, that golden stretch of day when the Skane light turns everything slightly magical. I opened the doors to the little terrace and stood there in my socks, still holding the car keys, watching swallows dart about a neighbouring barn. The fields rolled away in that gentle, undemanding way the Skane landscape has. No drama, no mountains, just soft green and blue and the occasional red dot of another farmhouse. My partner appeared with two cups of tea made from a stash we had brought from England, because some habits survive any journey. We sat on mismatched wooden chairs and said very little. A tractor passed somewhere in the distance. A bee investigated my shoe and found it wanting. The sun warmed my face in that particular way that makes you aware of your own existence without requiring you to do anything about it. I had packed three books with the intention of "getting through them." This ambition now struck me as almost aggressive. The first, a paperback novel I had been carrying around since March, sat on the kitchen table while I watched clouds move across the sky at a pace that felt deliberately instructive. The village shop, we later learned, was a ten-minute walk and stocked excellent bread and questionable wine. The beach, a little further, offered swimming for the brave and stone-skimming for the rest of us. But that first evening, we did not explore. We cooked simple food from supplies we had brought, opened the questionable wine, and ate outside as the light stretched toward ten o'clock. I thought about how rarely I allowed myself this, the pleasure of simply being present without achieving anything. There was nowhere to be, no sight that demanded ticking off, no schedule beyond the slow turn of the earth. The shed door, I noticed, had a small heart carved into it. I chose to believe this was intentional, a reminder that not every entrance is the right one, and that wrong turns sometimes lead exactly where you need to be. |
