I should have known the Sat Nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field of confused-looking sheep. Seven hours of driving from the ferry at Helsingborg, and there I was, bouncing down what I generously called a "track" in my slightly-too-large hire car, convinced I'd accidentally emigrated to the middle of nowhere. The mishap, you ask? I'd only gone and packed the wrong set of keys in my accessible pocket, hadn't I? Spent a good ten minutes at the property gate jabbing a Birmingham front door key into a Swedish lock, muttering increasingly creative combinations of English expletives while a very patient local cyclist watched from the road. I waved cheerfully. He did not wave back.

But then the gate finally yielded to the actual key, and I understood precisely why I'd come.

The house sits in that extraordinary fold of land where Hoeganaes meets the Kullaberg peninsula, and my first proper look came after I'd abandoned the car and walked the last hundred metres just to slow myself down. You know that particular Scandinavian light? Not the Instagram-filter version, but the real thing, low and honeyed even in late afternoon, catching the white timber walls and making the whole place look like someone had left a lantern burning inside. The garden tumbles down towards views I hadn't earned yet, wildish and unmanicured in that deliberate Swedish way, all meadow flowers and granite outcrops that have absolutely no intention of being moved.

I dumped my cases in the hallway with the unthinking abandon of the truly travel-weary, then immediately felt guilty about the lovely pale floorboards. The interior smelled of pine and something faintly maritime, that particular salt-and-wood combination you only get within sniffing distance of the Kattegat. The living room windows are enormous, almost rude in their generosity, framing a slice of coastline that made me stop mid-stride with a toothbrush still in my hand from my rushed airport freshen-up. I must have stood there like a proper lemon for five minutes, toothbrush dangling, watching a fishing boat trace its way along the horizon.

The kitchen, when I eventually found it, had that deeply satisfying Scandinavian practicality. Nothing showy, everything where your hand expects it to be. I made terrible coffee with the supplied machine, too tired to read the Swedish instructions properly, and drank it on the terrace wrapped in a blanket I'd found in a cupboard. The temperature had dropped to that fresh coastal coolness that makes you feel slightly more alive than you strictly want to be after a long journey. Somewhere below, waves were doing their persistent, patient work against the rocks.

What struck me most, I think, was the particular quality of silence. Not absence of sound, exactly, because there were gulls and wind and distant agricultural machinery doing honest evening work. More a silence of expectation, as if the place was waiting to see what kind of guest I'd turn out to be. Would I rush about ticking off sights, or would I settle into something slower? Even on that first evening, exhausted and slightly ridiculous with my key fiasco still smarting, I suspected it would be the latter.

I watched the light change from gold to something more lavender and serious, finished my dreadful coffee, and decided that tomorrow's exploration could wait. Some arrivals deserve their own unhurried evening, and this was unmistakably one of them.
