I have never been so relieved to see a red wooden cottage in my entire life. After twelve hours of travel that involved a delayed flight to Copenhagen, a train to Malmo that I nearly slept through, and then a hire car with a sat-nav that seemed personally offended by rural Skane, I finally pulled up to our little place near Tyringe. I was shattered, slightly hysterical, and absolutely convinced I had left my phone charger in the previous rental car. I had not, as it turned out. It was in my back pocket the whole time, which I discovered only after spending twenty minutes on hold to the car company in a state of mounting panic. A strong start to the holiday, I think we can all agree.

The cottage itself was exactly what I needed without knowing I needed it. Proper Swedish red paint, white trim, the whole fairy-tale situation. I stood there in the gravel driveway with my ridiculous amount of luggage, just breathing in that particular stillness you do not get in south London. The air smelled of pine and something else I could not identify, probably just more pine, but it felt significant at the time. I was too tired to be sophisticated about it.

Getting inside was its own small adventure. The key lockbox put up a decent fight, and I am not too proud to admit I may have whispered some very unkind things to it before the code finally worked. The door opened onto a kitchen that immediately made me feel inadequate about my own flat. Spotless, compact, everything in its logical place. A proper coffee maker waiting on the counter like a silent promise. I made a cup immediately, despite it being nearly nine in the evening, because some rules do not apply when you have driven through foreign countryside in the dark, convinced every shadow was a moose.

The living room had that wonderful Swedish thing of being simultaneously minimal and cosy. A wood-burning stove dominated one corner, and I made a mental note to figure out how to use it properly without burning the place down or filling it with smoke. There was a television I already knew I would not switch on once. Large windows looked out towards trees that were probably very attractive in daylight. At that moment they were simply dark shapes, but friendly ones somehow.

I dumped my bags in the bedroom without really looking, too busy investigating the bathroom like the thorough adult I am. Excellent water pressure, I noted, with the gravity of a property surveyor. Heated towel rail. The small victories matter when you have been travelling all day.

What struck me most, lying in bed that first night with the window cracked open to that pine-scented darkness, was how quickly the stress of the journey dissolved. Not instantly, I am not that spiritually advanced. But gradually, like the coffee wearing off and something better replacing it. The silence was not empty; it was full of small nighttime sounds I could not name. An owl, perhaps. Something moving in the undergrowth that I chose to believe was a hedgehog rather than anything requiring courage.

I thought about my phone charger panic and laughed properly for the first time that day. There is something humbling about travelling alone, about the ways you can unravel and reassemble in the space of a few hours. The cottage did not care about my dramas. It simply existed, solid and welcoming, waiting for morning to show me what the surrounding countryside actually looked like.

I fell asleep before I could find out, which was probably for the best. Some first impressions deserve proper daylight, and I had a feeling this place would deliver.
