About Skane
The thing about driving to a tiny place you've never heard of is that you assume your sat nav knows what it's doing. It does not. Somewhere between Lund and the coast, mine decided that "shortest route" meant "gravel track through a field of very judgmental cows." By the time I crunched onto the proper drive at the Farhult/Hoeganaes cottage, I was forty minutes late, mildly traumatised by bovine staring, and absolutely desperate for a wee. I sprinted inside, missed the step down to the living area entirely, and performed what I can only describe as an accidental forward roll onto the sofa. Welcome to Skane.

The cottage, once I'd stopped seeing it from an undignified horizontal position, was exactly the sort of place that makes you exhale loudly without meaning to. Light everywhere. Proper Scandinavian light, the kind that makes you feel like you're living inside a freshly laundered sheet. I opened the patio doors with the theatrical flourish of someone who absolutely knew how they worked on the first try, and there it was: a little garden, a couple of weathered chairs, and nothing but birds making a tremendous fuss in the hedgerow. I sat down still wearing my coat, still holding my car keys, and did absolutely nothing for twenty minutes. It was magnificent.

The first afternoon set the tone entirely. I found a faded paperback in the bookshelf that someone had left behind - some detective nonsense set in Ystad, which felt appropriately local - and read the same paragraph six times because I kept getting distracted by how warm the sun felt on my ankles. The garden faces south, apparently. I know this because I spent a good hour contemplating the shadows and congratulating myself on this observation, as if I'd discovered a fundamental law of physics rather than just noticed where the sun went.

I did eventually rouse myself to investigate the village, though "investigate" suggests rather more purpose than was involved. Farhult has that particular south Skane quality of being extremely pretty while pretending it isn't trying. Red wooden houses, well-tended gardens, the occasional cat who has clearly never been told it doesn't own the entire street. I walked to the little harbour in about fifteen minutes, watched a man methodically untangling fishing lines with the patience of a Buddhist monk, and walked back. That was the expedition. I returned with a loaf of bread from somewhere, though I couldn't now tell you where, and the smug satisfaction of someone who has exercised without actually exercising.

The Hoeganaes bit of the equation, a smidge further along the coast, provided another afternoon's gentle wandering. There's an old brickworks museum that I fully intended to visit properly, but I got as far as the cafe, bought an excellent cinnamon bun, and sat outside watching Danish ferries slide across the horizon instead. Some holidays are for cultural enrichment. This one was for watching water and feeling pleased about it.

What I hadn't expected, and what the first chaotic arrival hadn't prepared me for, was how quickly doing very little becomes the entire point. I stopped checking my phone by day three. Not as a conscious digital detox - I'm not that person - but because there was genuinely nothing I wanted to know that seemed more interesting than whether the clouds were doing anything interesting. They rarely were. This was somehow perfect.

On my final morning, I did the same accidental forward roll onto the sofa, this time on purpose, just to see if it felt as ridiculous as I remembered. It did. Then I sat in that garden with my terrible detective novel and watched the sun climb properly over the hedge, and I thought about how I'd arrived frantic and ridiculous and somehow left neither of those things, or at least less so. The cows, I decided, had probably been trying to tell me something useful.
