About Skane
I should have known the holiday proper had begun when I found myself wedged between a hay bale and somebody's abandoned wellington boot, trying to fold a map that had clearly never been folded before. The Sat Nav had given up somewhere near Malmo, leaving me to navigate the final stretch to Beddingestrand with nothing but optimism and a crumpled printout. I took a wrong turn at Abbekas, which sounds like the title of a lesser-known ABBA track, and found myself on a farm track that grew progressively more intimate with the hedgerows.

This, I now realise, was the best thing that could have happened.

The cottage itself materialised after another ten minutes of increasingly apologetic reversing. A traditional Skane farmhouse, all red timber and white trim, with a garden that seemed to have arranged itself without human interference. I dumped my bags with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who had crossed the Sahara rather than driven from Copenhagen, and set off on foot with no particular destination in mind. The map remained defiantly unfolded in my pocket.

Beddingestrand village revealed itself in fragments. A narrow lane led past weathered fishing huts, their paint peeling in that deliberate Scandinavian way that suggests rustic charm rather than neglect. An elderly chap was mending nets outside one of them, and we conducted a conversation of sorts - my Swedish extends to "tack" and hopeful smiling - during which he pointed vaguely toward the shoreline and made a gesture I interpreted as "walk that way, you fool."

The beach itself was not the grand dramatic affair of travel brochures. It was better. Flat limestone slabs gave way to shingle, then to sand that squeaked satisfyingly underfoot. I walked for perhaps twenty minutes without seeing another soul, passing only a solitary cormorant drying its wings on a rock. The Oresund stretched grey and calm to the horizon. Somewhere out there was Denmark, but from here it might as well have been another planet.

Hunger drove me inland again, and here my lack of planning proved its worth. I stumbled upon a smallholding selling fresh asparagus from an honesty box - the season was just turning - and followed my nose to a bakery in Abbekas proper that I would never have found deliberately. The woman behind the counter spoke English with the resigned patience of someone who has explained many times that yes, their cardamom buns are worth the detour. She was not wrong.

The afternoon dissolved into a series of increasingly improbable discoveries. A churchyard at Hojup with gravestones dating to the 1600s, leaning together like gossiping pensioners. A meadow path that emerged suddenly beside a small lake, where somebody had left a rowing boat chained to a post with a combination lock set to 0000. I did not take it out. I thought about it, which is almost the same thing.

By evening I found myself at a tiny harbour I cannot now name, watching a fisherman unload his catch with the methodical rhythm of someone performing a ritual they have completed ten thousand times. He offered me a mackerel, which I accepted with the enthusiasm of someone who had no means of cooking it and no intention of refusing. It sat in my fridge for two days before I admitted defeat and returned it to the sea in the approved manner, by which I mean I gave it to a cat.

That first day taught me something I keep forgetting and relearning. The planned holiday, the checked boxes and timed entries, has its place. But the wrong turn, the unmarked path, the conversation conducted in gestures and goodwill - these are the transactions that actually matter. I arrived at that cottage convinced I needed rest and structure. What I needed, apparently, was to get properly lost and trust that Skane would reveal itself in its own time, which it did, generously and without fuss, to someone who had not earned it in the slightest.

The mackerel, incidentally, was not the last thing I accepted from a stranger that week. But that is another story, and another wrong turn, and another evening when the map stayed in my pocket where it belonged.
