About Oerebro
The mishap came ten minutes before arrival. Bursting for the loo, I had spotted what I thought was a discreet bush beside a logging track. It was not discreet. It was not a bush. It was a very small, very angry juniper, and I emerged with scratches in places no man should discuss in a family article. My wife has not stopped laughing. The children have adopted "Don't go near the angry bush" as their holiday catchphrase. I am considering changing my name. But then we stepped out of the car at Stora Ykullen, and the whole sorry journey melted away. The cottage sits in that perfect Swedish sweet spot: remote enough to feel properly escaped, civilised enough that you do not need to forage for breakfast. The timber facade had gone that silvery-grey colour you only get from proper Nordic winters, and the covered terrace was stacked with firewood that smelled of pine and possibility. My daughter immediately claimed the wooden swing by the lake. My son discovered the barbecue area and began lobbying for sausages with the intensity of a junior politician. Inside, it was all warmth and clever simplicity. The open-plan living space had that particular Scandinavian gift of making you feel at home without trying too hard. A wood-burning stove dominated one corner, and I caught my wife eyeing it with the expression she reserves for good wine and uninterrupted books. The kitchen was compact but genuinely equipped, not one of those holiday rentals where you need to MacGyver a meal together with a blunt knife and hope. I opened the fridge to find it already humming, waiting for the local produce we had picked up in Orebro's old town that morning. The bedrooms were upstairs under slanted ceilings that my tall brother-in-law would have despised but which felt deliciously cosy to the rest of us. My son immediately tested the bounciness of every mattress. My daughter opened every cupboard, because she is eight and that is what eight-year-olds do for sport. I stood at the little window overlooking the lake and felt something in my shoulders release that I had not realised I was carrying. What struck me most was the quiet. Not silence exactly; there was birdsong, and the distant putter of a neighbour's boat, and the wind moving through pines like someone whispering secrets. But the absence of traffic, of urgency, of that constant low-grade hum of normal life. I had not expected to notice it so sharply. I think perhaps I had forgotten what unhurried felt like. By evening we had achieved that particular family-holiday miracle: everyone doing different things in proximity without conflict. My wife had found a deckchair and a novel. The kids were throwing stones in the lake with the solemn concentration of children who believe they might skip one eventually. I was attempting to light the barbecue with Swedish matches and misplaced confidence. The sausages were burnt. The beer was cold. The angry bush was, by unspoken agreement, never mentioned again. |
