About Oerebro
We were headed to a little holiday home on the outskirts of Orebro, booked through Novasol, and I had built it up in my mind as something between a rustic cabin and a boutique hotel. The reality, when we finally found it, was far better than my imagination. A proper Swedish cottage, red wooden walls, white trim around the windows, tucked among birch trees with that particular stillness you only get in Scandinavia. My daughter bolted out of the car before I had even turned the engine off. My wife gave me that look, the one that said she was choosing to forget the roundabout incident. The key was in a lockbox, which I fumbled with for an embarrassing length of time. Turns out I had been entering the code backwards. Another small victory for my dignity. But stepping inside, the warmth hit us immediately. Not fancy warmth, not designer radiator warmth, but the kind that comes from a well-loved wooden house that has seen plenty of family holidays before ours. The living area had a wood-burning stove in the corner, a proper one, and I immediately decided I was going to master it by the end of the week even if it killed me. The kitchen was compact but surprisingly well-equipped. I am not much of a cook, but I could picture myself attempting Swedish meatballs and making a respectable mess of it. There was a small dining table by the window, and through those white-trimmed frames we could see nothing but trees and the faint suggestion of a lake somewhere in the distance. My daughter pressed her nose against the glass, leaving a smudge that I knew would still be there in four days because that is simply how holidays work. The bedrooms were upstairs, steep wooden stairs that creaked charmingly with every step. Our room had a double bed with a patchwork quilt that looked like it had a history. My daughter's room was smaller, with a single bed and a little desk where she immediately arranged her collection of travel-sized teddies in order of height. Some things are universal, regardless of where you are in the world. I will be honest, there was a moment that first evening where I sat on the little wooden deck with a cup of tea that had gone slightly cold, and I felt something shift. Not dramatic, not life-changing, just a quiet realisation that this was exactly what we needed. No itinerary, no pressure to see everything, no queueing for attractions. Just a red cottage, some birch trees, and the promise of a slow few days together. I am not normally one for gentle self-reflection, but Sweden does something to you. My wife joined me on the deck, and we watched the light change through the trees until my daughter called down asking when we were going to light the stove. Priorities of a seven-year-old are wonderfully straightforward. That first night, I did manage to get the stove going after only moderate swearing. We sat around it with the kind of contented tiredness that comes from actual travel, not airport lounges and taxi queues. The cottage smelled of woodsmoke and something faintly herby from the little garden outside. My daughter fell asleep on the sofa, and we carried her up those creaking stairs without her waking. I still think about that roundabout sometimes. If I had taken the correct exit first time, we would have arrived twenty minutes earlier, and I would have missed my daughter's face when she saw the cottage, and I would not have had that quiet moment on the deck with cold tea and a head full of nothing much at all. Small wrong turns, I am learning, sometimes lead exactly where you need to be. |
