I have never been so relieved to see a wooden veranda in all my life. Twelve hours after leaving Manchester, there I stood in Odensbacken, just outside Orebro, clutching a broken suitcase handle and what remained of my dignity.

The journey had been one of those classic travel sagas that starts with misplaced optimism. I had packed the night before with the smug efficiency of someone who definitely had not packed the night before. Rushed airport breakfast, a delayed connection in Copenhagen, then a train from Orebro Central that I nearly missed because I was trying to pronounce "Odensbacken" convincingly enough to ask directions.
