I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I packed the sat nav but forgot the car charger. There we were, somewhere north of Stockholm, my phone blinking its final goodbye at four percent battery, and my wife giving me that look. You know the one. The "you said you'd checked everything" look. The kids in the back had already exhausted their supply of travel sweets and were beginning that low-level hum of boredom that every parent recognises as the calm before the storm.

Somehow, through a combination of desperate screen squinting and following signs that looked vaguely familiar from my hasty research, we found our way to Kopparberg. Not the cider, mind you, though I wouldn't have said no to one by that point. The town in Vastmanland County, about two hours from Orebro, where we'd booked a traditional Swedish cottage for the week.

The property sat at the end of a gravel track, nestled among pine trees that seemed to lean in with curiosity at our arrival. A red wooden house with white trim, the classic Swedish summer house look that makes you feel instantly like you're in a postcard. The key was in the lockbox exactly where the instructions said, which felt like a small miracle given my organisational track record that day.

I fumbled with the code, dropped the keys, picked them up, and promptly walked straight into the low beam of the porch. My wife laughed. The kids laughed harder. I rubbed my forehead and laughed too, because what else can you do? The door swung open and the smell hit us immediately - that particular blend of wood polish, dried herbs, and something faintly nostalgic that old cottages seem to hold in their walls.

The living room was simple and uncluttered, wooden floors worn smooth by decades of feet, a proper fireplace stacked with birch logs, and furniture that looked like it had stories to tell. No fancy minimalism here, just comfort. The kitchen had everything you actually need rather than the twenty-seven gadgets nobody uses. I spotted the coffee maker and felt genuinely emotional.

The children bolted upstairs to claim bedrooms, their footsteps thumping on the wooden stairs. My wife wandered to the window overlooking the small garden, where a wooden table and bench sat waiting for someone to sit with a drink and watch the evening light filter through the trees. "This," she said, "is exactly what we needed."

She was right, of course. I'd spent weeks worrying about whether the place would be clean enough, modern enough, entertaining enough for the children. Standing there with a slight bump rising on my forehead, listening to my daughter's delighted shriek from somewhere above, I realised I'd been missing the point entirely. The cottage wasn't trying to be anything other than what it was - a peaceful, straightforward place to slow down and be together.

That first evening, we walked the quiet lanes around the property, the kids collecting pine cones with the seriousness of archaeologists on a dig. We found a small lake nearby, barely ten minutes on foot, where someone had left a simple wooden jetty. The water was still and dark, reflecting the sky as the sun began to dip. My son asked if we could swim tomorrow. I said of course, though I suspected the temperature might require some Swedish stoicism on my part.

Back at the cottage, I managed to get the fire going after only three false starts and one minor smoke incident. We sat with mugs of tea, the children finally still, watching flames dance while the pine trees whispered outside. My wife caught my eye and smiled. No words needed.

The sat nav charger remained forgotten in a drawer at home. I never missed it once.
