About Oerebro
The hire car was another matter entirely. I spent a good ten minutes trying to fold myself into what I can only describe as a vehicle designed for someone with considerably fewer knees than I possess. But I was still winning, I thought, as I navigated the E20 westward toward Askersund. Winning right up until I realised, somewhere past Karlskoga, that my single rucksack contained precisely zero warm layers. Just linen shirts, a pair of shorts, and a optimistic attitude that the Swedish summer would behave itself. The property sat near Norra Hunna, a proper red wooden cottage with white trim, the sort you see on postcards and rather suspect of being too charming to actually exist. It existed. It also existed in what I can only describe as a meteorological event. The late August sky had turned that particular shade of grey that promises prolonged commitment to drizzle. Not dramatic rain. Not weather you can rally against with a good coat and a sense of adventure. Just persistent, damp, thoroughly Swedish drizzle that seeps into your bones and your mood simultaneously. I stood in the gravel driveway, linen shirt already clinging in a way that suggested hypothermia rather than Mediterranean holiday, and had one of those moments. You know the sort. The ones where you recognise your own stupidity with almost affectionate resignation. There was a hot tub, I noticed, steaming gently on the wooden deck like a promise I had not earned. The forest behind the cottage seemed to lean in, dark and dripping, already preparing for the autumn that was clearly impatient to arrive. The key was in the lockbox, and I fumbled with it while my fingers went numb. Inside, the cottage smelled of woodsmoke and something else, something green and growing that I later realised was the surrounding birch forest pressing against the windows. The owners had left the heating on, bless them, and I stood on the threshold of this warm wooden box and felt something shift. Not the weather, obviously. That remained steadfastly committed to its grey purpose. But something in my own ridiculousness, standing there shivering in inappropriate clothing, struck me as almost perfectly right. I spent that first evening not exploring Askersund's harbour or walking the lake paths as I'd planned, but rather in a borrowed fleece I'd found in the bedroom cupboard, watching the drizzle turn to proper rain against the windows, drinking coffee that tasted of the slightly metallic local water, and feeling the season settle around me like a damp but not unwelcome blanket. The summer was ending here, properly ending, and I had arrived precisely at the moment of transition. The hot tub, when I finally braved it, was a revelation of steam and darkness and the particular silence of a Swedish forest evening, broken only by rain on water. It was not the holiday I had packed for. It was better, though I would not admit that until several days later, wrapped in that same borrowed fleece, watching the first proper autumn storm roll across Lake Vattern. |
