About Oeland
The mishap came at the worst possible moment. We'd been given a key code for the property, Resmo Lilla Froe, and I had carefully photographed the instructions on my phone. Carefully, I thought, until I realised I had somehow taken seventeen pictures of my own thumb and not a single one of the actual code. My partner's face went through several interesting stages as I demonstrated this feat of technological incompetence. There may have been some light swearing. OK, quite a bit of swearing. The cottage sat there in the late afternoon light, all red timber and white trim, utterly indifferent to our crisis. Salvation arrived in the form of a neighbour walking her dog, who found our frantic key-pad prodding deeply amusing and phoned the owner for us. I have rarely felt more like a hapless British tourist, and I say this as someone who once got locked in a Prague toilet. The door finally clicked open, and we practically fell inside. What struck me first was the smell. That particular Scandinavian combination of pine, dried lavender, and something I can only describe as "holiday." The cottage was smaller than it appeared in photos, which somehow made it more delightful. Low ceilings, painted wooden floors with that satisfying creak, and windows that framed the Oland landscape like deliberate paintings. Someone had left fresh apples in a bowl and proper coffee in the tin, not the dusty instant I had mentally prepared for. I immediately walked into the low beam separating the kitchen from the living area. My partner laughed for a solid minute while I rubbed my forehead and pretended this was somehow the cottage's fault. The beam and I would develop a complicated relationship over the coming days, but in that moment it felt like a welcome, if painful, initiation. We dumped our bags without ceremony and went straight out to the garden, or rather the bit of wildflower meadow that comes with the place. The sun was doing that prolonged Scandinavian evening thing, hanging about for hours like a guest who doesn't know when to leave. Buttercups and something purple I couldn't identify nodded in the breeze. Somewhere in the distance, a tractor rumbled with that unhurried rural sound that immediately lowers your blood pressure. The village of Resmo itself, we discovered on a wobbly post-journey stroll, consists of about six houses, a church that looks like it has seen some things since the 1800s, and silence. Glorious, uninterrupted silence, broken only by birds and my own footsteps crunching on the gravel road. I found myself walking deliberately slowly, as if adjusting to a different speed of life whether I wanted to or not. By the time we returned, the light had turned golden and the cottage looked almost impossibly picturesque. We sat on the wooden bench with mugs of that proper coffee, not speaking much, watching what I later learned were probably lapwings wheeling about over the fields. My thumb-photo disaster already felt like a funny story rather than a catastrophe. That first evening, we didn't do anything remarkable. Ate bread and cheese from a supermarket in Borgholm, opened a bottle of wine we had lugged all the way from the UK, and fell asleep on the sofa before nine. But I remember thinking, beam-bruised and slightly delirious, that sometimes the best holidays announce themselves not with fireworks but with apples in a bowl, a low ceiling to watch out for, and the particular peace of a place that has absolutely no interest in being anywhere else. |
