About Oeland
My partner found this hilarious, obviously. There she was in the actual kitchen, visible through a second doorway, filming the whole thing on her phone. "Welcome to Oland," she said, in that tone. I extricated myself from mop handles and stepped properly inside, and honestly, the broom cupboard debacle was forgotten almost immediately. The place smelled of proper timber, that warm pine scent that no air freshener could ever replicate. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the garden like a deliberate painting, and beyond the fence I could just make out the flat, bright expanse that meant the Baltic was nearby. Not dramatically cliff-backed like Cornwall, but low and honest and somehow very Swedish. I opened the patio doors, failed to find the light switch for a full minute, then gave up and stood there in the half-dark of a June evening that was refusing to properly end. We had stopped at the ICA in Borgholm for supplies, which meant we possessed the holy trinity of Swedish self-catering: decent coffee, something called polarbrod that looked suspiciously like normal bread but apparently was not, and a bottle of red that cost roughly twice what it would at home. I made a terrible cup of coffee in a machine I did not understand while my partner wandered about touching things, opening cupboards, making satisfied noises. Holiday home people know this ritual. You must investigate every drawer. You must comment on the quality of the frying pan. The garden was what sold me, even in my exhausted state. Properly private, enclosed by that weathered wooden fencing that everything here seems to be built from, with a terrace that caught the last stubborn light. I kept expecting midges, being English, but there were none. Just this strange, still warmth and the distant sound of someone else's lawnmower. I later learned that was actually a tractor, because of course it was. This is Oland. Tractors are ambient noise. We ate our polarbrod with cheese that had melted slightly in the car, standing at the counter because the energy to sit properly had left us. Through the window, the garden softened into grey-green, and I felt that particular holiday feeling where your shoulders drop about three inches without permission. The long journey, the broom cupboard humiliation, the hire car pine assault, all of it became properly funny rather than merely absurd. I woke at half four the next morning because my body thought it was being heroic, padded out in socks to that same terrace, and watched the proper dawn arrive over trees I could not name. The air smelled of sea and pine and something faintly agricultural, and a rabbit was already working its way across the lawn with the focused intensity of someone who knew exactly what it was about. I stood there with terrible coffee and felt genuinely grateful for the broom cupboard, for the delayed bus, for every small friction that had delivered me to this particular stillness. Some holidays earn their peace the hard way. |
