About Oeland
The ferry from the mainland was barely ten minutes, but somehow I'd still managed to make a complete hash of things before even reaching Oeland. There I was, proudly presenting my booking confirmation to the deckhand, who squinted at it, then at me, then back at the paper. "This is for next month," he said, in that politely pained way Swedes have perfected. I'd done it. I'd actually booked the wrong dates. Cue forty-five minutes of frantic phone calls, a sympathetic but firm property manager, and an unexpected lesson in the exchange rate when I had to pay again for the correct week. I stood on the Kalmar side watching gulls fight over a dropped chip and wondered if I should just turn round and pretend this had never happened.

But I didn't. And honestly? Thank goodness for my own incompetence, because Lottorp turned out to be exactly the sort of place that rewards the stubbornly persistent.

The cottage sat tucked behind a low stone wall, red-painted and white-trimmed in that classic Swedish countryside fashion that makes you feel like you've wandered into a children's book illustration. Mine was one of several in a little cluster, each with its own patch of garden and a terrace that caught the afternoon sun like it had been designed by someone who truly understood the sacred art of doing absolutely nothing. I dumped my bags, made a cup of tea that went cold because I got distracted by simply sitting, and that was more or less the pattern for the week.

Mornings began slowly. I'd pad out in socks and a borrowed fleece, kettle on, then migrate to the terrace with whatever paperback I'd brought. The light up here is different somehow - clearer, I suppose, or maybe I just had time to notice it properly for once. There were birds I couldn't identify making a tremendous racket in the nearby trees, and I made a game of trying to spot them without actually moving from my chair. I saw approximately none of them. The fleece stayed on until about ten, then came off with the satisfaction of someone who has earned their warmth through patience rather than effort.

The village itself, if you can call it that, is the sort of place that makes you slow down by sheer force of atmosphere. There's a little shop for essentials, a bakery that does proper cardamom buns, and not much else. I wandered down most days for milk or an ice cream, exchanged pleasantries with locals who seemed genuinely pleased to see a visitor attempting Swedish with the enthusiasm of a toddler, and wandered back. That was the extent of my exploration, and it felt like plenty.

One afternoon I cycled to the nearest beach, which took all of twelve minutes and left me feeling disproportionately accomplished. The sand stretched empty in both directions, the Baltic doing that particular grey-blue thing it does, and I lay on a towel reading the same paragraph approximately fourteen times because I kept dozing off. A family appeared at some point, built an elaborate sandcastle, then left. I watched the tide start to reclaim it and felt no particular urge to intervene.

Evenings were for grilling whatever I'd cobbled together from the shop, opening a beer, and watching the light linger impossibly long. I spoke to almost no one, did nothing of note, and cannot remember the last time I felt so thoroughly restored. There is a peculiar joy in discovering that your own company, given sufficient sunshine and absolutely no obligations, becomes entirely sufficient.

I left with sand in my shoes, a slightly sunburned nose, and a firm resolution to book things correctly in future. Though if I'm honest, part of me hopes I don't.
