About Oeland
The mishap came seconds after I stepped out of the car. In my rush to locate the key safe and assert myself as competent holiday dad, I managed to trip over absolutely nothing, fling the code instructions into a lavender bush, and somehow activate the car alarm with my backside. My teenage son filmed the whole thing. My daughter gave me the look she has perfected since turning twelve, the one that says she is weighing up emancipation. My wife simply retrieved the paper, opened the door, and remarked that at least the neighbours now knew we had arrived. And what neighbours they turned out to be, in the most generous sense of Swedish countryside neighbourliness, which is to say a red farmhouse visible across a field and a horse that watched us with the unblinking patience of someone who has seen many British families arrive and unravel. The Graesgard itself settled my nerves almost instantly. It is the sort of honest, unfussy cottage that makes you want to exhale properly for the first time in months. White-painted wood, a proper pitched roof, and a covered terrace where we later sat with mugs of tea watching the light do that particular flat, golden thing it does across Oeland's farmland. The sitting room had a wood-burning stove that my son immediately claimed for his territory, and a kitchen that smelled faintly of the previous guests' cinnamon buns, a ghost I was more than happy to host. I had worried, driving down from Kalmar, that we might feel too remote. That the children would mutiny without reliable phone signal and that my wife would miss her morning coffee ritual from the fancy machine at home. But there is something about this landscape, these flat fields and stone walls and distant glimpses of the Baltic, that slows your pulse without you noticing. The children discovered a badminton set in the shed. My wife found that the stovetop kettle made better coffee anyway, or at least claimed to. I found myself standing at the kitchen window longer than necessary, watching a hare lope across the meadow behind the house, thinking about how rarely I stand anywhere without checking my phone. We did not do much that first evening, and that was the revelation. Pasta with sauce from the supermarket in Morbylanga, a walk down the lane to establish our territory, early bed because the journey had somehow exhausted us more than a full day at work ever could. Lying there listening to my son's muffled voice through the wall, still negotiating bedtime at fourteen, I felt that particular cottage-holiday contentment that has nothing to do with sightseeing and everything to do with being somewhere that asks nothing of you. Tomorrow we might cycle to the nearest beach, or we might not. The horse will still be there either way, judging us gently. I will probably trip over something else. But right now, in the quiet of a Swedish farmhouse evening, that feels entirely like the point. |
