About Oeland
We'd been sent the key code for our place in Farjestaden, somewhere near Tveta, and I had it saved in three different places because I am nothing if not paranoid about technology failing me. What I had not accounted for was my own spectacular talent for misreading numbers. I punched the code into the key box by the cottage door with the confidence of a man who definitely knew what he was doing. Nothing. Tried again. Still nothing. Third attempt, slower this time, and I actually said the numbers aloud like that would help. My wife was giving me that particular look she has, the one that manages to convey sympathy and mild despair in equal measure. The children had already spotted a trampoline in the garden and were vibrating with the need to use it. I retreated to the car to check my phone, and there it was, staring back at me: a six, not an eight. I'd been trying to break into someone else's holiday for a solid ten minutes. I can only hope they weren't watching from the window, dialling the local police. The correct code worked first time, obviously, and I stepped inside with what I hoped looked like dignity rather than profound relief. The first thing that hits you about these Swedish cottages is the smell. It's that particular combination of pine and something else, something clean and slightly nostalgic, like every summer holiday you've ever had compressed into one inhalation. This one had a proper lived-in feel without being cluttered, the sort of place where you can immediately imagine evenings playing cards at the kitchen table while something uncomplicated simmers on the hob. The children shot off to investigate bedrooms, which left me and my wife to do that awkward dance of opening every cupboard and drawer to establish where things lived. I am incapable of not doing this. The coffee maker situation was assessed and approved. The shower was tested. I noted the little terrace outside with its view towards trees and sky, already planning my morning coffee routine with embarrassing specificity. What struck me most, though, was the quiet. Proper quiet, the kind that takes a moment to adjust to after the constant low-level hum of everyday life back home. You could hear birds, obviously, and occasionally a distant car, but mostly there was this spacious sense of having stepped outside normal time. My wife found me standing by the window, mug of tea in hand, and didn't say anything. She just joined me. We'd been there perhaps half an hour, and already the journey and the key code fiasco felt like they belonged to someone else. The children reappeared demanding to know about dinner, about the trampoline rules, about whether Sweden had different Netflix. We fed them, let them bounce until they were pink-cheeked and agreeable, and sat out on that terrace as the light stretched long and golden across the garden. I thought about how I'd nearly let a single wrong number derail my mood entirely, how quickly I'd spiralled from competent family organiser to flustered man arguing with a key box. The cottage didn't care. Oland didn't care. There was time here, proper unstructured time, and I was determined not to waste it fretting about my own small incompetences. We watched the sky turn that particular Scandinavian blue that seems to last forever, and I made a silent promise to myself to get the coffee maker going early, to sit on that terrace with nowhere particular to be. The trampoline creaked occasionally in the breeze, a reminder of promises made to children. Tomorrow, we would explore properly, find a beach, perhaps cycle somewhere. Tonight, we were just here, full of simple food and the particular pleasure of having arrived somewhere that felt, already, like it might let us breathe a little more slowly. |
