I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I tried to unlock the wrong cottage. There we were, three hours after leaving Kalmar, standing on the doorstep of what I was absolutely convinced was our Borgholm let, jiggling a key that stubbornly refused to turn. My wife was giving me that look. The children were already moaning about needing the loo. And then a very polite Swedish gentleman appeared from round the side and gently informed me, in excellent English, that our actual place was two doors down. I had confused the house numbers. Classic me, apparently.

The proper cottage, when we finally reached it, turned out to be an absolute gem. Traditional red wooden cladding, white trim round the windows, the whole charming Scandinavian shebang. It sat on a decent plot with mature trees and a garden that immediately became the children's territory. They were off exploring before I'd even got the cases out of the car, shrieking about some discovery or other behind the shed. I chose not to investigate immediately. Some things are better left mysterious until after tea.

Inside, the place had that lovely lived-in feeling you want from a self-catering property. Nothing too precious, nothing too shabby. A proper farmhouse kitchen with a big table where we would end up spending most of our time, playing cards and eating far too many of the local biscuits I'd impulse-bought at the supermarket. The sitting room had a wood-burning stove that I immediately decided was going to be my evening domain, regardless of whether the weather actually demanded it. There's something deeply satisfying about a fire, even in August, even when you're technically on the same latitude as Scotland.

The bedrooms were simple and clean, the sort of uncluttered spaces that make you realise how much unnecessary stuff you've got at home. I found myself standing in the master bedroom, looking at the plain white walls and thinking perhaps minimalism wouldn't be so bad. Then I remembered my own garage and laughed at myself. Some revelations are best left on holiday.

What struck me most, that first afternoon, was the quiet. Proper countryside quiet, broken only by birdsong and the occasional distant tractor. Borgholm itself was just a short cycle away, close enough for convenience but far enough that you felt properly removed from everything. We could see the castle ruins from the lane at the end of the garden, sitting up on its hill like something from a storybook. The children immediately demanded we visit tomorrow. I privately hoped for ice cream bribery potential.

By evening, we'd established our pattern without even trying. The children in the garden until the light finally faded, which takes forever in a Swedish summer. My wife unpacking with the efficiency I lack. Me attempting to work the unfamiliar coffee machine and pretending I hadn't already broken it. We ate a simple supper of bread and cheese on the terrace, slightly chilly in that way Scandinavian evenings can be, and watched the sky do its slow dance toward the long northern dusk.

I sat there with my mug of questionable coffee and felt something shift. The wrong-door embarrassment, the journey fatigue, the usual low-level anxiety of being somewhere new, it all just settled. This was going to be one of those holidays where not much happens, and that is precisely the point. No itinerary, no must-sees beyond what we fancied, no pressure to make it Instagram-perfect. Just a red cottage, a garden full of curious children, and the particular peace of Oeland stretching out around us.
