I had been on the road for what felt like days by the time the car finally rolled into Taernaby. The journey from the airport had been long enough, but the last stretch through thick pine forest had me checking the sat nav every few minutes just to feel like progress was still happening. We were both tired and a bit grumpy when the small sign for the holiday home finally appeared, and that was when the funny little mishap struck. I had been so focused on not missing the turning that I forgot to slow down for the gravel drive and ended up with a gentle crunch as the front tyre met a half-hidden rock. Nothing dramatic, just enough to make us laugh at ourselves and feel properly arrived.

Stepping out of the car, the quiet hit me first. Not the empty sort of quiet you get in cities after dark, but a soft, living stillness broken only by the sound of wind moving through the trees. The wooden house stood there looking exactly like the pictures, only warmer somehow, with its dark red paint catching the low evening sun. Our breath came out in small clouds as we carried the bags inside, and I caught myself smiling for no real reason at all.

Inside it felt instantly welcoming. The open living space had big windows that looked straight out onto the forest edge, and the simple wooden furniture gave everything a homely feel without trying too hard. We dropped our things and wandered through the rooms like children exploring, opening cupboards and testing the sofa before we had even unpacked properly. The kitchen was small but well thought out, with everything we needed for the first night already in reach. I stood there for a moment just looking out at the view and realised how rarely I slow down enough to notice things like this.

We stepped back outside to fetch the last bag and stood quietly for a while, taking in the crisp air. The light was already beginning to fade, painting everything in soft blues and greys, and I felt the long drive finally leave my shoulders. It was one of those rare moments when you catch yourself thinking that maybe the mishaps on the way are just part of what makes the arrival feel right. The house seemed to settle around us as if it had been waiting, and I found myself looking forward to the next morning already, even though we had only just got here.
