I set off for Norrfors with all the usual optimism of someone who has checked the sat nav twice and still managed to take the wrong turning three miles out of town. The little track that leads down to the cabin looked perfectly innocent on the map, but the low sun caught me right in the eyes and before I knew it the front wheel was half in a ditch and the rear one spinning on pine needles. It was not a dramatic crash, just enough to make me feel slightly ridiculous as I reversed out with a sheepish wave to a passing cyclist.

Once I had parked and carried the bags inside, the quiet hit me like a soft blanket. The cabin sat among tall pines with a strip of grass running down to a small river, and the light was that clear northern kind that makes everything look freshly washed. I left the unpacking for later and simply sat on the wooden steps with a mug of tea, listening to the water and the occasional creak of the trees.

The first full day set the tone for the rest of the stay. I had grand ideas about walking trails and maybe hiring a kayak, yet the sunshine on the little deck proved far more persuasive. A folding chair, a paperback, and the faint smell of pine resin became my daily routine. Every so often I would wander down to the riverbank, dip my toes in the cold water, and watch tiny fish dart between the stones. The path along the edge only stretched a short way before the trees closed in, so there was never any pressure to go far.

By the second afternoon I had stopped checking my phone altogether. The cabin had a simple kitchen with everything I needed for lazy meals, and I found myself making long breakfasts that stretched into lunch without any sense of hurry. Neighbours passed on bikes or in small boats, offering a nod rather than conversation, which suited the mood perfectly. Even the occasional mosquito seemed half-hearted in the bright light.

One evening I tried to light the little wood burner just for the crackle, then realised the temperature outside was still warm enough for the windows to stay open. I ended up sitting outside again, watching the sky stay pale until nearly midnight. It felt oddly luxurious to do so little and feel no guilt about it.

Looking back, that silly wrong turn on arrival had been the perfect introduction. It forced me to arrive properly, rather than rushing straight into plans. By the time I packed the car again, the only real achievement I could name was having read two books and learnt the names of three different birds from the deck. Somehow that felt like quite enough.
