About Lappland
The place itself felt instantly welcoming. A simple timber house with a deck that caught the evening light, it sat quietly among the pines with nothing but the sound of birds and the occasional rustle of wind through the branches. We unpacked the bare essentials, left the rest in the boot, and just stood there for a while, breathing in that clean northern air. There was a small firepit out the back and a couple of folding chairs already waiting, as if someone had known we would not want to do very much at all. The next morning, we woke to proper sunshine, the sort that makes you squint even through the blinds. We made coffee, carried it outside, and did not bother with plans. The garden sloped gently towards a little clearing, and from there you could wander along the edge of the woods without going far. We strolled down to the nearby lake, which was barely ten minutes away on foot, and spent an hour or so just watching the water. No swimming, just sitting on a log with our feet in the grass, listening to the quiet. Back at the cabin, the day unfolded without any effort. I read the same chapter of my book three times because I kept getting distracted by the light moving across the deck. My partner dozed in one of the chairs, occasionally waking to point out a bird or to ask if we needed more coffee. We had packed a few bits from the shop in Lulea on the way up, but mostly we just picked at things when we felt like it. There was something oddly satisfying about not having a single thing we had to do. In the afternoon, the sun stayed warm enough to sit outside without a jumper. I wandered a short loop around the property, finding nothing more exciting than a few wildflowers and an old stack of logs, but it felt like enough. Later, we lit a small fire and watched the flames while the sky slowly turned that soft pink you only seem to get this far north. I caught myself thinking how rarely we actually stop like this, how easy it is to fill every hour when really all you need is a chair, some sun, and the patience to do nothing at all. By the time evening came around, we were both perfectly content with having achieved almost nothing. The mishap on the way up already felt like part of the story, a reminder that sometimes the best holidays are the ones that start with a wrong turn and end with you wondering why you ever rush anywhere. |
