I had been looking forward to our little escape to Lappland for weeks, picturing crisp air and quiet trails, but the journey there turned into a proper comedy of errors. We arrived at the cabin after a bumpy drive along winding forest roads, only to discover we had packed our walking boots in the wrong bag. My partner fished them out from under a pile of jumpers while I stood there laughing at my own daft mistake, grateful that at least the sun was shining and the temperature felt more like early summer than the usual Lapland chill.

The cabin itself sat just a short stroll from a gentle coastal path, and once we were sorted we decided to make the most of the unexpected warmth. The weather forecast had promised rain, yet the sky stayed clear and the breeze off the water felt pleasantly fresh rather than biting. We set off along the shoreline, boots finally on the right feet, following a narrow trail that wound between tall pines and patches of heather. They suggested we keep to the coastal track rather than heading inland, since the warmer air had brought out more insects among the trees. We took their advice and continued, enjoying the way the path opened up now and then to give sweeping views across the water. Every so often a small bird would dart across our path, and the sound of waves lapping against the rocks made a soothing backdrop to our conversation.

By midday the sun had grown stronger, so we paused on a rocky outcrop for a quick picnic of sandwiches we had picked up on the way. It was one of those simple moments that somehow felt special, sitting there with our feet dangling over the edge while the water sparkled below.
