I set off from the station in Jokkmokk with the satnav confidently promising a short drive to our little red cabin near Kabdalis, yet somehow ended up on a gravel track that narrowed until the trees nearly brushed both wing mirrors. A low branch caught the roof box with a comical thunk and sent a shower of pine needles across the windscreen, so I pulled over laughing at my own stubborn refusal to turn back at the first fork. Once I reversed onto a patch of mossy verge and checked the map again, the cabin finally appeared through a clearing, its porch stacked with neatly cut logs and a faint trail of smoke rising from the chimney.

The moment we stepped inside, the smell of birchwood and fresh coffee greeted us like an old friend, and we wasted no time ditching the unpacked bags in favour of an unplanned wander. Instead of heading straight for the marked lakeside path, we followed a half-hidden track behind the woodshed that wound between low juniper bushes and suddenly opened onto a tiny tarn no wider than a cricket pitch. Dragonflies skimmed the still water while a single reindeer stood ankle-deep at the far edge, watching us with mild curiosity before ambling away. We sat on a fallen log and shared the thermos we had meant to save for later, both quietly pleased that getting briefly lost had handed us this pocket of perfect silence.

Later that afternoon the same spirit of happy detours led us down an unmarked forestry road where the gravel gave way to soft reindeer moss underfoot. We found an old timber hunting shelter tucked between two boulders, its roof sagging under a carpet of lingonberry plants that someone must have missed for years. Inside, a handwritten note in Swedish invited visitors to leave a log for the next person, so we added a dry branch from our own rucksack and felt oddly connected to whoever had passed through before.

By the time we wandered back toward the cabin the low sun was turning the birches pale gold, and I caught myself thinking how rarely I allow a wrong turn to become the actual plan. The mishap on arrival had nudged us into a slower rhythm where every accidental path seemed to hold something quietly remarkable, and for once I felt no urge to correct the route or chase a checklist.
